Oscillators with simultaneous waveforms

What synths out there have oscillators that can do multiple waveforms simultaneously? I can think of the Junos, Jupiter 6 and the SH-101, which can all do simultaneous square and sawtooth. Are there any others? Any non-Rolands? Can the MKS-80?

I'm kind of thinking about looking for a Jupiter 6 just so I can have 2 oscillators each doing saw and pwm. I bet that's obese!

Elka Synthex, Prophet 5. Various modular synth oscillator units can do it, too - you get 4 outputs, one for every waveform.

Nah, not so much; both are derived from the same core waveform. Actually, I wouldn't describe the JP6 as "fat" in the Moog sense at all.

JP6 is thin no matter what

A6 can have saw positive/negative, Square/PWM, Triangle, sine and a sub-oscillator all at once.
And you can mix in more sinewaves and ring mod post filter

Mks80 can't

Hello,

Combining multiple outputs from a single tone generator does
not fatten the output signal in the way that combining two
or more independently detuned tone generators does.
It simply gives the output wave of the oscillator a more complex
harmonic structure.

Most commercial synthesizers from the 70's thru today allowed
you to select one waveform at a time.
Of those non-modular machines that allowed you to choose
multiple waveforms, each output wave was switched either fully
on or off. This is the most common method of multiple waveform
selection you will find on machines which allow more than one output
for each tone generator. Many have been named on this thread i.e,
SE1, Prophet5, Memorymoog, OB-8, etc.

A more flexible method of selecting multiple wave shape outputs is
the one used on the the Octave Cat/Kitten series.
They have a separately adjustable volume levels for each waveform,
along with the sub-octaves. Yamaha also used this method on the
CS-5/10. Roland used this on the Juno 6/60/106, SH-101 and others.
The Andromeda is a more recent commercial instrument that
implemented this method of waveform selection.

Another flexible oscillator design features waveform morphing.
This method uses a single continuously variable output which has the traditional sawtooth, square, pulse, and sometimes, triangle outputs calibrated to points along the waveform knob's rotational path.
In between the points where the traditional waves are produced,
you get a continuous mix of the two adjacent waves on the wave
shape knob. Among machines that have this are Micro/Multimoog,
and the newer Moog Voyager/Phatty series.

Regards,

L

me too but I'm going to post anyway.
most complex oscillators on a modular synth have multiple waveforms on the output. some even have internal feedback routing (Malekko Wiard anti-oscillator). no combining raw waveforms does not shift these in time, which can make the sound "fatter" but it sure helps having them on jacks ready to send one into a delay line, for example.
So does some good software. (Max DSP, Reaktor, ..... a few more)

SCI Pro-One CAN use multiple waveforms per single oscillator... and also both oscillators can use multiple waveforms! I can't understand why Pro-One wouldn't count here...

Also, the Yamaha's polyphonic CS -serie uses also multiple waveforms.. CS-50 / 60 / 80.

Yes they do. On the Pro-One, you get switches that turn the waveforms on or off. Osc A, you get Square or Sawtooth. OSC B you get Square, Saw and Triangle. Works the same with the LFO.

Also, on the Mopho, one of the available waveforms is a combo of the Saw/Square waves.

just a note to say that it would be 1 osc circuit generating the simultaneous waves, but within that circuit there would be different generators, and they would be running constantly from start up. even on synths that only allow you to select one waveform at a time, if you took a probe to the osc circuit you would see all the waveforms available (at various points on the board) running continually. the selector switch simply allows them to enter into the synths matrix

Of the ones I have:

Prophet 5 and Pro One
Octave Cat
Voyetra 8
ARP 2600
SE-1X
Andromeda A6
Mopho

Those all support multiple waveforms from a single oscillator. Don't think any of my others do.

The Elka Synthex doesn’t do multiple waveforms simultaneously. You can only select one waveform (Tri/Saw/Squar/Pulse), and then you can select FM-Mod from the other DCO and Ring Mod. Still it sounds very good.

Kind regards
