Personally Id get the 888, but if money was not an issue the 999 would be good to, depends if you can justify the price difference mainly for the filter. Though i know someone who upgraded from 888 to 999 and says he much prefers the 999. Machinedrum could be another one to consider also, but more on the digital sound, and while also sounding nice especially at the top end, it don't sound as mean/massive/warm nor does the bottom end have the same thump as the analog machines your considering. Would be good to go to a store and have a jam on some demo / display versions, but that can be difficult depending on your location. Personally though id prefer to have a 999, then a 909, you have allot more you can do, and don't need to add distortion and other FX to get the 909 to be more flexible with it's sounds.

so should i be able to get 909 and 808 sounds from 888? machine drum is tempting, but more in the department of functions and capabilities rather then its sonic qualities... if i would get a digital drum machine, it would rather be linndrum or drumtraks, not only because they a part of the history, but easy and fun to work with Quote:

The linndrum has the sweetest swing also. I love love love mine and can listen to it's hihats swing all day. The only advantage the Drumtraks has over the linn is the ability to sequence drums at different pitches. Drumtraks shuffle is a bit robotic (SCI seemed to not do shuffle/swing very well)

I've seen this. But honestly find it a bit dodgy. Unit has been stored for 23 years and suddenly the pots are scratchy and knobs burned. Not to mention that you cannot contact the seller nor pose questions. Weird. Quote:

True. But i would say that panning and having a stereo output as well as individual outputs is also a great advantage toward the Drumtraks. Is there any chance you could make a short video or audio just to hear how the sampled 909 kick sounds on Linndrum? Did you know you can modify tuning for each sound on your Linndrum? There's Yahoo Linndrum group, sign in and you will be able to retrieve documents how to do it. ![]() Here's a video: ‪LinnDrum LM-2 with Tuning Modification‬‏ - YouTube Quote:

With regard to modding my linn.. I mod my gear often, but some things I dont want to do.. Drilling holes in something as classic as a linndrum is one of them. Putting in detune mods for the TR-707 I got no probs doing, and have done for plenty of others. www.myspace.com/mikesmodifications I'm a bit lazy in the uploading samples dept, but I'm installing a midi kit in my linn tomorrow, so I may be able to that for you.

Yup you can get 808/909 sounds on the 888, it's a sampler also so you can add anything you like. Though you do have a few good options mentioned in the thread now, hard choices! |

there are not so much good videos on youtube about the 888, the 888 might be a compromise for the all mentioned machines the thread |

888 is much a match for all the machines mentioned in this thread, and as it's a sampler as the others you can expanded it if you wish. It's also very easy to use and you can make beats with ease. It's whole interface is one of the things that appeals to me the most, you can just get down to making beats instead of learning how to programming the thing or generally just program beats. (I don't own one by the way just played one a couple of times) Did you check out the demo's on Jomox site also? They don't have the best demo's, but gives kinda of an idea of what's possible. http://www.jomox.de/audio_demos.php?lang=2 There only this decent ish one on soundcloud: (Though not so good either) http://soundcloud.com/jims-computer-...se-888-beats-1 Best would be able to have a go of ones you considering if possible, only you will know which will fit your needs.

The pots are scratchy because they were not turned for 23 years. I bought it from a guy in his mid 40's who lived out in the middle of nowhere in New Hampshire. He was selling off all his old gear(95% guitar stuff), this was just a single item in the lot. He was moving everything out because he needed money. I talked to the guy for about an hour after the sale and he pretty much gave up on music once he graduated and got a real job in 1988. The gear went into his parent's closet in NH for about 20 years while and he and his wife went Silicon Valley to work in computers. They came back to NH a couple years ago and his gear has been gathering dust in a closet in their house. When he said it was in storage I believe him. He had no idea about electronic music or why this was a cool drum machine. To him, the 909 was just something he used to keep time on his old portastudio. The guy didn't have a motive to lie to me about it and he certainly wasn't in a hurry to take my money and get me out the door.

To be honest being stored for that long that's a good 909 to have! You can fix the pots!

My apologies. I didn't want to sound rude. It's just I was surprised to see those burning marks, and i still can't contact you. Probably because i am not in the shipping area that you've selected. I believe everything you said though. The unit really looks nice and still shies. Quote:
