Dance Music Sales, and Doing it Alone.

Anybody in the dance music scene making money on sales?

If so, are you on a label or doing it by your self?

If on a label, how much do you get?

If you are on you own, how hard was it to get signed to mp3 stores?

Do you press vinyl still?

Both.

It depends on the label and the record. The least I have ever made on a record is $200. The most I've made is $650 on vinyl, and I am still waiting to hear about digital sales figures for that release. The digital numbers should be pretty decent because a few big names charted it and it made the best seller list on a few sites.

I have only done digital with my last record because it came out on a larger German label and I would have had to forgo an advance if it is was vinyl only. If you have the connections, it is not hard at all.

Vinyl is where I make my name. I usually sell between 400-600 per record. I am getting ready to start touring Europe and that is when you start making real money. One decent DJ gig pays better than a hot record.

thats awesome, what i ment by how much was the percentage from the label. I keep getting offers for 50/50. That seems a little weak to me.

Sounds pretty standard to me.
Going alone is really easy now with digital aggregators.
I would do both (I do).

I would love to know too...but just by googling it and reading other threads, you need a label to get it out there..and the label takes around 50, thats after the the label's distributor takes 50 first. So I assume the distributor takes 50 of the entire sales profit, then the artist and the label split what the dist pays you guys...so the artist only get around 25% of the total profit sales what the dist sells it for, I would think. And to start your own label and sell your stuff on the big sites like beatport, discogs, itunes, juno uk, you need to prove to those distributors first that you're stuff is really hot and already making money, otherwise there is no point in even wasting time with you - hence, needing to get signed on a known, established label first.... but there are just my assumptions and things i've read googling it..I def could be wrong and far off...but it sounds realistic...

make a youtube video with your track as the background for some popular images get hits then put a link to your bandcamp at the bottom and title your vid with your name. wash rinse repeat.

if people like your tracks then they will buy them, if not then they won't.

The trick to this is volume the more vids you have out there the more likely you will get a purchase. Also I have heard that a donate option works almost better than sales. If you expect this to be easy then you should try another way to make money. If you make 4-5 videos a day then I can guarantee after a month you will be making substantial money if your tracks are good. YMMV

Some good ideas. Iam suprised that 50/50 is the going deal. I guess maybe I will rethink my offers.
