I feel the same way about Renoise.

I'm not paid for it, but I love the program and use it myself almost daily. I mean, I do admit that I have ties to some of these people because I've been in the tracking scene but I'm not a part of the team. Renoise & Live or Renoise & PT is my favorite environment to work in, you just get the best of both worlds....

At the very least, it's the best utility wave editor/sampler out there. I agree, some people can't get into it but if they only took the time to learn it, they'd change their minds I'm sure of it.....

As far as the topic is concerned, I think people should be encouraged to offer free services for practice. Sometimes it's how you gain experience. Sure it could be used for better business down the road, but that's the beauty of it. If a mix they did got them popular, they'll never forget the mixes that cut their teeth and they'll never forget you for giving them a chance.

I understand some of the old guys on here or whatever don't want to lose their clients but really. They should be able to chime in on it too.

IDK, perhaps it would've been more suited to the mix-off/showcase forum and instead of deleted just moved there. I do agree that people need to use those forums more often. Sometimes I check it out for the heck of it and find something to play with just to see how other people make music.....

It's all a learning experience. I wish this site was geared more towards education and hard science than a business venture to be completely honest.

There we are...this is the answer we were looking for.

So a sig saying "I offer free mastering, PM me" is ok? But starting a new thread saying "I offer free mastering, PM me" is not?

I think that is fair and makes sense.

What about starting a new thread saying "I want to become a better mastering engineer, so I would like some tracks to practice on"?

Good point. Reptil, can you answer this for us? If I started a thread with title:

Send me your final mixes for me to practice my mastering!

would that be ok?

Haha you guys are pushing it.
This is obviously a grey area. I'll get back to you on that, ok?

yes please - use the report a post function for that! We actively WANT to catch people gaming the system and have some tricks up our sleeves to help us investigate if we are warned about them. So please assist us with that via the report a post function..

I think the mastering moderators (and engineers) were sick of people going ' hey! I will do the work for free'! They felt it was dragging their business down the toilet.

So we disallow it. To be honest I forget, but will check.

We are trying to bring online a Gearslutz members services directory. Perhaps that might work out. but we haven't established the rules for it yet.

I think the main thing the cynics in this thread aren't taking into consideration is as follows.

Is sending your unreleased and perhaps uncopywrited material to a total stranger wise? - namely - What if they 'get weird' on you?

* Would you like it if they turned around and said they worked so long on it after your suggested changes - that actually, they now feel they deserve some payment?

* Would you like to hear a sampled guitar riff or isolated vocal line from your masters on a released track a year later that you did not give permission for?

* How would you like to get a copy that had just the first few minutes mastered - then were told you had to now pay for the full version?

I can assure you that NONE of the above scenarios are paranoid imaginations, people really do stuff like that! - oddballs, change their minds, people can be flakey - or not 100% honest. Who wants to give a flake their multitrack?

Anyhow - that pretty much spells out the negatives to giving a total stranger your multitrack.
