Being a big fish or the only fish in a small pond is actually pretty lame. I don't live in a "small" city (we have an NBA team), but it is a very behind/backwards one. I am as far as I know, and I know most everyone in the pitiful excuse for a "scene" we have, i am the only original non-strictly DJ EM music maker/gigger here. But lets take a moment to grasp the depths of the EM scene/culture here. There are no random EM events/shows here. The ONLY thing there is is a weekly little EM event/part called "Robotic Wednesdays" which happens every Wednesday night. That's it. Nothing else. There is a single promotion/event crew named Dance Robot Dance which puts it on. The same DJs (four of them)/me play every time again and again. Once every few months Katie (the head of DRD) will pull a "big name" (used liberaly) DJ for a special Friday or Saturday event. This event is held in a deli that holds perhaps 200 people. And if you are a DJ or producer who plans to play anything other than electro/dubstep/grime you simply will not play. The ONLY reason I get to play each week (energetic IDM/electronica) is a small but dedicated fan base and the fact that I was involved in sexual relations with Katie for a year or so. Even then I ALWAYS am in the opening spot. Luckily we have a strong enough Indie rock scene thanks to people like the flaming lips that I have a much better/funner time playing at one of three little Indie venues. Skrillex is pretty big popularity wise in the US at the moment. Katie put on his show here and the crowd did not max out so he literally had less than 300 people there. I have played the same venue and had the same crowd and I am no where near his level of talent much less popularity. I will say though I hear a lot of shitte talked on him but he spoke to me for a while during my load in/setup and then forever after the show and he is cool as can be, totally humble realistic and fun. How many other fairly popular producers are going to sit down after a show with their laptop and you, some unknown talentless piece of trash (me) with yours, and openly compare and talk about how we prepare our live sets in Ableton. When I was younger in traditional bands I opened for at the time a very popular nu-metal band and they wouldn't even look at us. Sonny on the other hand literally walked up to me during set up and introduced himself/shook my hand/asked me questions. A real honest human being very similar to a lot of us, in fact there are people here that are probably a lot more out of touch with reality than him. So that block of text totally got sidetracked from the main point, sorry! But anyway on the relevant stuff, that's the city I live in. I truly wish there were other live non-DJ EM makers here so the boundaries could be pushed in the way of exposing people to variations of EM other than Deadmau5/Rusco. There is a poster here named NWSooner who used to live here, I'm not sure when he lived here but I'm sure he can confirm the problem with a situation like the one in this city. There are various bands that go out in public places where they hangout with their live shows. And there are various clubs also where these people come. And there are various other methods also for music promotion like posters and flyers.
