Mpc3000

I know this is old news for 99% of the musical community but after starting some years ago all in the box and taking a slow journey through the world of hardware accumulation - all the while finding my enjoyment of music-making increase in direct inverse proportion to the time spent in front of a computer - I finally picked up an MPC3000 at the weekend. They really are amazing aren't they? One of the best designed and made pieces of kit ever, surely. Certainly the most enjoyable I have owned, possibly by a long shot. Feels like the final piece of the workflow puzzle. Yes, as I say, I know this is not news - but had to share. I'm actually using MIDI again.

Changed my world. I do all my composing and sequencing with it now...Get the Mansell Labs OS and a SCSI card reader with the RS-16X software and it's over!

It's great that people are still discovering how awesome the MPC's are. Extremely easy to setup, record and edit patterns/songs. Oh, and it's also an awesome drum sampler and pad controller. I recently installed an IDE CF reader in my 2000xl to bring its storage up-to-date. I was using Jaz and Zip disks since the day I got it. I am excited to try out the new editing techniques Roger Linn has designed for the Tempest and Linndrum 2. The Linndrum 2 will be interesting if it is essentially a new MPC. I don't think I will get one since I am happy with my MPC. I am getting a Tempest though.

2000s aren't even in the same league as the 3K. One is the REAL Linn MPC the other is not.

Whatever. Didn't know my 2000 was gonna get ripped on for saying MPC's are great. I am happy with the 2000 and I didn't have the money back then to get the 3000 LE (LE was the only new 3000 at the time). I use an S5000 for sampling now, so MPC is just for sequencing.

Dont' take it personally - the OP started a thread on 3K machines. To come in here derailing it with the 2K is like talking about your Honda on a Mercedez thread

i did think about a 60 but couldn't quite deal with the memory limitations. I'm sure they sound fantastic though. I just crunch my sounds up with some external hardware before i stick it in the 3000 if thats what im after, seems to get me there..(kinda)

I've owned a 60II, they're incredible machines.

One technique you might want to use to 'lo-fi' your 3K is to buy a cheap 8 or 12 bit sampler and use that to 'process' sounds prior to transferring to the 3K. I do this with an SP1200 and Prophet 2000. However, I would LOOOOVE to get my hands on an Emax 1 rack!

+1..I been making music since the 80's and had had every sampler made except a MPC, I finally got one a few months ago, a 1000 and I am having a shit load of fun with it, I could care less about the swing and the other crap, I got the JJOS and making music is a lot more fun for me now!!

I did this as an example to show you that the 3000 can control both an SP1200 and another synth - it's an amazing sequencer

Congrats on your 3000 purchase. Years ago I bought the MPC60 when it first came out, but now use an MPC4000 as the center of my music productions. I'll probably never sell it as it's too valuable of an instrument for me. I truly believe that whatever MPC you have, it's the user/musician that creates something special with it, as it's just a creative tool.

Enjoy your 3000!!!

I have all the below and rate the MPC 3000 as the best followed by the 5k and 60.

MPC 60 mk I (with display mod)
MPC 3000 LE
SP 12 Turbo
MPC 1000 (JJOS)
MPC 5000
Maschine

I have MPC 3000 and SP 1200. Love 'em. I use the 1200 more though because it's so fast workflow and the SSM filter kicks.

I put an S3000/MPC 3000 push on/off contrast display switch, so I can preserve the backlight.

Yeah I got tired of shelling out cash for dimmed back lights, now only if my K2000 had one

ha yeah think it might be the one i bought then as the fella i bought it off mentioned a potential buyer in brighton with a 4k. i nearly went for a newer model but had heard so much love for the 3k i went down that route and for my setup/workflow it works perfectly, i use the computer for the fiddly complex modern sky's-the-limit sample editing stuff and final multitrack audio recording, and the beautiful, superbly designed simplicity of the 3k for the fun inspiring actual-making-the-music side. Best of both worlds!

Agreed.

The MPC 3000 is the one for tight sequencing, hard hitting drums and vibes.

All the finicky stuff I do in my DAW.

The 3K is the real deal. Tight sequencer, fat sound, great connectivity. Such a powerful tool in the studio. Even the strange sounding filter can be useful. I don't consider a SCSI card reader to be a must, though I do own one. I miss the floppy disks scattered around the studio.

BTW, do you guys run your 3K through a preamp or process it somehow prior to tracking it back into the DAW?

I miss my MPC 3000

Got rid of it some years ago after using Reasons. I will get one soon that thing sequencing abilities works like magic. What ever pattern is in your head it will deliver that exactly. Had a MPC 2000 XL but got rid of it in less than a weeks purchase. It did not feel anything like the 3000. If it say's Roger Linn you can't go wrong.
