Don't know about best, but certainly a good module:

Kurzweil PC2R with Orchestral Expansion.

Probably the Yamaha Motif rack.

It seems to be the popular choice in that dept.

Just out of curiosity, what is the purpose of hardware/romplers anymore? Aren't you just paying for the sounds/data? Or does the hardware interface play a role in your choice?

I always liked the Roland stuff. The fantom rack is cool. Motif rack is okay also.

I would likely go for a Sampler with a good library.

I got recently a Roland JV-1080 (top ROMpler during the early nineties) and to think it is sold for around the same price an EMU Ultra is just insane to me...

I think the EMU Ultra is a really good sampler and sounds amazing (at least the libraries I got with mine are really good), and you can always add some more samples to it.

This kind of solution would definitely be my choice

The Yamaha is the best but good luck programing it. The Fantom XR is no fun either, but you can load it full o SRX boards. Expensive.

Roland SonicCell is nothing more than a Fantom X + an audio card.

Judging by demos and marketing Jupiter 80 will probably be the best acoustic synth so far.

he wants a module though

sonic cell offers bigger screen than xr, 16 part performance mode, does more than fantom XR minus the sampling, 1 srx slot, mic input, and used for under $500. tabletops are nice

I picked up a motif xs rack off ebay a few years ago and have been really happy with it. It fits perfectly into my studio as an all purpose workhorse.

your choice. its subjective. all have pros and cons. some are better with woodwinds, some are better with guitars, some are better with strings. there's no perfect acoustic hardware module. check out sonic cell see if the tabletop design will help in your workflow

soniccell, motif xs rack, korg m3 module are the best out there. in my personal opinion, kurzweil pc2r acoustic sounds are kinda weak, IF you play solo
