Calculate your Gearslutz Co-efficient

I'm at the end of a long shift at the desk, which gets you thinking (or is that hallucinating):

I was trying to formulate what makes a true Gearslut; I ended up with a formula which rewards maximum acquisition at maximum cost for minimal output with minimal revenue; i.e. the lower the final co-efficient the more of a Gearslut you are:

A = Number of Hardware Synths (for softsynths use "1")
B = Estimated cost of purchase (or market value if higher)
C = Commercial output (# iTune tracks or other outlets) - for zero use "0.1"
D = Estimated annual revenue (if any!)

Formula:

D - ((B/A)/C) = Gearslutz co-efficient

The higher the negative number, the bigger the 'Slut; the higher the postive number, congrats you're making your gear work for its keep!
What we're rewarding here are the folks out there spending big bucks and searching for the very best synths, but not getting any return versus the ones banging out the tunes with a Nanokey and laptop earning the money.

Let's see who the biggest Gearslutz are....

that sound like fun

a =5
b= 2000 + 3000 + 400 +150 + 500 = 6050 euros
c=0.1
d=0

D - ((B/A)/C) = Gearslutz co-efficient

0-((6050/5)/0.1)= - 12.100 euros

By the way I did not compute soft synths , I use only 2 which I purchased for a total of 350.

a: 10
b: 1800€ (that´s what i paid, est. market value 2100€)
c: 3
d: 0

=-60 (-70)

buying lowend synths doesn´t make you a slut

but an average of 180€ per synth is nice, who said softsynths are cheaper?

B: 400 (£)
C: 0.1
D: 0

D - ((B/A)/C) = Gearslutz co-efficient

Gear sluttiness = -2000

Not too bad for a newbie GS. Fun thread.

You could factor in the number of posts divided by years spent on the forum, or hours per week, etc for some additional insight.

Alright - I'll give this a shot - not easy given vintage synths, so I'll cheat a little an average things out a bit...

A: Lets say 47 - About 27 hardware, rest soft.
B: Gonna hafta guesstimate here - say $22500
C: .1
D: None!

So 0 - ((22500 / 47)/.1) = 0 - (479 / .1) = 0 - 4790 = -4790

First post here - so I guess I've found my rightful place!

No, I think the co-efficient should be the number of purchases in a year divided by the posts read + written.

-1333 due to commercial outlets (c=3). If I used 0.1, then -40,000. Mostly due to the modular.

my coefficient could be way higher if i could include analog drum machines and/or all my other crap haha. but if this is "analog synth only" coefficient, then yeah.

you can include analog drum machines i believe. it's a hardware synth, a percussion instrument.

so i'm not a gearslut? commercial outlet throws me off. i used 3 for itunes, amazon, cdbaby. even though i don't make jack, my gearslut score is lower. i wanted a gearslut trophy patch to hang on the wall.

how about a revised formula?

(D/C) - (B/A)

average cost per synth minus average amount of money made per distribution source, lol.

honestly im not sure that makes sense either

this formula seems kind of arbitrary

I was giving credit to output, otherwise we're assuming that we're in it for the money

ahh, makes sense. so a true gearslut would have no outlet. lol. I figured most users here would least use 1.0 as they have some outlet. even if on Bandcamp. i figured outlets for 'sales'. if not then you could include Soundcloud, YouTube, etc. probably should clearly define 'outlets', otherwise we're going to get coefficients all over the map
