Attn Jules! Electronic music forum?

A post Jules made recently in the "who's commercial?" thread got me thinking, particularly his comments about being a bit of a MIDI dunce.

Why not have an Electronic Music forum? Stylistically, it's a broad category, but things like MIDI, synth programming, or gear to process that stuff is certainly very different than recording guitars, vocals, and acoustic drums. As someone who creates electronic/experimental music, it can be really difficult to disseminate the information and advice people are giving out when I have to keep this little voice in my head going, "they do progressive rock."

It'd be kind of nice to be able to share tricks and tips with people who're more on the same page with stuff i'm doing. Again, even though the styles can vary a lot (much like rock/pop), discussion that's centered on this sort of thing could easily be relevant for everyone from techno producers to film composers to sound design people.

Make room for us synth fools!

(apologies if this has been brought up before, but I didn't see anything when I searched...!)

I think it would be a nice addition to the gearslutz board.

The music I do (when I'm not recording other people) is sorta half/half accoustic and electronic. As a producer/engineer I'm probably most influenced by the work of Dave Fridman. The man is genius in my book.

And I bet I could learn alot from the folks that are on the electronica side

Check out a group called Dead Hollywood Stars. Sort of a weird mix of technoid/electronic music and spaghetti western acoustic guitar work.

You may want to check out the forums at www.electro-music.com (don't forget the 'dash'). Lots of very good info there, especially in the sections devoted to the Nord Modular and G2 Modular.

I'm into a gearslut section for this. many indy/pop acts produce a very electronic orientated way these days so there's a broad range of people to contribute aside the regulars here ... thumbsup

It's not that i'm against other forums, but part of the reason I started reading/posting at Gearslutz vs. other places was the quality and variety of the content. There's a unique mix of people here, imo, from the most lowly of project studio folks to well-known engineers and manufacturers. I've always seen the site as a fairly comprehensive place to discuss gear, technique, and everything in between.

Electro-music is a great forum, but I think many of the people here help make GS a pretty unique forum that easily sets itself apart from most others. Especially given the tendency towards outboard gear lust around here :p

Feel free to stop by the hip hop section.... We're all using the same gear.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

True enough.. but i'd say the only similarity is the existence of beats and synths. Comparing the two is like saying hip-hop and rock are interchangeable because both feature singers :p

Then again, I tend towards the experimental side of electronic music.. e.g. Somatic Responses, Aphex Twin, or Skinny Puppy. I couldn't tell you thing one about hip-hop *or* progressive house.

I think it's a good idea man---all things MIDI, Electronica, Synths old and new, DXI's etc. It's definately a category all its own. My lust for it began with Kraftwerk, Tangarine Dream, my ARP 2600 and Mini Moog. It hasn't ended yet.

I like the idea too.

There's a lot of music/styles that can be covered.

I wish I could start building up my outboard.. I decided to improve workflow instead, so once my tax returns arrive, i'm adding a Korg MicroKontrol and Battery. I've discovered that I freakin' *hate* trying to play percussion parts on a crummy keyboard. After that, it's new monitors and the Phoenix Nice DI that i've been on about for freakin' ever.

Sadly, my most recent acquisition is an Emagic AMT|8. Not too exciting but then, i'm waaaay behind you on gear.

Yeah, new and vintage synths, sound modules, samplers, drum machines, midi interfaces, virtual instruments, etc. - there's plenty of electronic GEAR for people to focus on and slut over. And it doesn't have to be based on any particular music genre. thumbsup

This will be great.
Especially that there are not many forums on the net - other than those with kids wanting to be the next super-house Dj (nothing wrong with that.. but..)

Synths & samples oriented forum.
Discussions about the latest digital trick or the heaviest grooves on the planet.
Me - one happy poster

in theory a good idea, although the diversification of categories, spreads people out more thinly meaning less responses

maybe

There already is a music computers forum on GS and really it's a totally different thing than what we're asking for here. Most modern music involves a computer at some point, for better or for worse - this is a little more focused than that.

Honestly I wouldn't enjoy an Electronic Music forum if all we talked about was computer issues. What's the point, I can go to OSX Audio for that (and I do). I want to go beyond just computers here.

Speaking of which, if Jules does go ahead, have you considered getting Endmusik and Zerosum to join us over here? Or are they hanging around already and I just don't know it?

In any case, total agreement here. I'm after the nitty gritty stuff - modular patching, modmatrix insanity, bizarre outboard signal chains to run synths through, MIDI nightmares, and all that fun stuff. As mentioned, most of us doing music use a computer at some point - merging the two would turn this into little more than a forum for tech support and software vs. hardware debates.

I'd even go so far as to say that maybe software synths and whatnot should remain a topic for Music Computers. If Jules should go ahead with this, establishing a clear differentiation might be helpful.
