There's a lot to be said on this topic, but if you don't believe that there is big corporate greed and back room deals going on, then you are blind.
This is nothing new... it has happened for as long as there has been a record industry. Labels pay to top 40 radio stations to get air time and top charts, and so thise stations become advertisement mediums. It's the same way TV works.

The real question is why do people listen to top 40 radios?

Cause they don't know any better, lack of education/influences. For most of them music is more a life style accessory that doesn't warrent any further investigation. "Feed a horse thistles all its life and it will snub the sugar cube" etc, etc.

I used to think that too for many years. Now I'm not so sure.

People that enjoy Britney Spears really like it, and if you presented them with with some Mahler, or maybe some "unknown" ambient artist like Steve Roach they would still pick Britney Spears, or Avril Lavigne. And I'm not talking about teenagers only. My step mother for example, a 40 something woman, listens to top 40 stations on her car, and she enjoys it...

So the matter at hand IMO is not so much cultural education or life style snobbery, but taste. Which is directly related with perception.

Plastic Passion Alert!

Your obsession with the concept of "passion" was lampooned before this last post of yours.

The reason for the piss-taking is because passion is an essentially meaningless construct people invent for themselves because it sounds 'right', respectable and romantic. In the real world people don't worry about passion, they just get on with things. The real passion comes naturally, it doesn't need to be sign-posted.

Just ask the England football team how useful it is to keep going on about "passion".
