Noise from Korg Triton gets louder the lower I put the volume.

Pretty much as the title says...

I own a Korg Triton. On full volume, there is very very little noise.

When I move the volume fader down, I can here a lot of electronic noise. The noise I hear is a mix of electric hum and if i have the arpeggiator on, I can actually hear electronic pulsating in the BPM I have set.

I know this isn't just me. I have a buddy that has the same keyboard with the same weird problem.

Any suggestions?

Ok so if it gets worse the lower you put the volume, then why lower the volume? Surely you want a high SNR ratio? Output hot - low gain on your mixer?

I can't remember the Triton having balanced outs, so maybe it's some sort earth loop issue?

Sounds like you have a compressor effect turned on. If there is nothing else to compress/amplify its turning up the sound of the noise/static.

I have to lower it a little because if its all the way up, I cant hit notes as hard as i want without the sound distorting.

As far as the compressor theory... its a good idea, but the triton is just going direct in with no inserts or anything affecting it.

what's the rest of your signal path?

If it's sounds distorted when the volume is full-up, my initial summising would be that the mixer gain is turned up too high.... (or the channels are overloading due to eq or fader position)

This is common, workstation keyboards usually have crappy circuitry in the amp stage. Plus your mixer gain may be set too high. Also using lots of dynamics processing will totally bring up noise like crazy. Also, you don't have to turn up any trim knobs unless you are padded, and if it's way too loud still then you need to pad somehow.

Use spdif or spdif to aes box if your interface supports it, the regular outputs are really just meant for live performance. It's NEVER a wise idea for intricate data systems to be mixed with the analog stage in close proximity because it radiates interference like crazy on everything else (hence why you're hearing the stupid metronome clock in the signal). This is the same problem all in one sound cards have, and also the main reason why (amongst many others granted) professionals offload anything unimportant specifically to the conversion of audio to the card while keeping the rest in a breakout box.

I'd say if it's a digital synth, using the digital outs will give you the highest quality and at least you can choose your converters if you wanna use outboard or print analog.

Hi Decembersky1984,

I'm familiar with this problem and it's something that can be solved. My Triton classic started showing similar symptoms of digital noise, especially at low volumes. My post on the korg forums describes the problem and solution in more detail: Korg Forums :: View topic - Noise Issue

Best,
