Software Compression

Hello. I have searched what i'm looking for before i posted but not found what I need (though i am sorry if something similar has been posted and i've missed it).
Basically i'm writing a dissertation on compression and the loudness wars, and one of the sections in my essay is about the history of compression. What i'm trying to look for is information on the first software compressors, who created them, and how they've progressed over time?
If anyone has any information regarding this or knows where to find it I would be extremely grateful, as I seem to have stumped the almighty google God
Thanks again.

Digital compression was available in hardware during the mid 1980s (i.e. SPX-90 and similar multi FX), long before any computer DAW existed.

I know, I'm doing the history of compression in general, and i've already covered the hardware compressors Hardware audio processors were around as early as 1940s
