Thread Starter | Headphones for producing electronic music
Been looking into the Shure SRH 440s and 840s and read abit about them. Just want to know if they are idea for producing electro and trance. I have heard that the 440 lacks bass. The 840s are pretty much double the price of the 440 and not sure whether to invest that much more for what i read not many extra improvements. Offtopic: Got an amp which connects my speakers to djing set and computer and what not, and was wondering if thats enough to get good quality sound with the headphones rather than getting a headphone amp |

| bowasd, I apologies , I thought you wanted headphones for DJ-ing. If you are going to produce, as in mixing / recording, you want headphones that are flat frequency response (Neutral and central sound output), with an impedance of 250. Don't go less, because for example... 80 is more for commercial electronics.. ipods, laptops, Hi-Fi theatre systems and etc.. not for musical production. Therefore, since 250 needs more to drive the headphones, you'll need a headphone amp. This will give clearer SPL dynamics, of the flowing frequencies to the ears. If you want to produce, look around for Beyer-dynamic headphones. Practically the closest recording mix you'll ever get, before hitting the reference monitors. If you are looking for bass impact headphones K 181 DJ Otherwise, there is no harm in going to your local music store and putting on different brands, types of headphones to determine what will suit your needs. However it's a different ball game all together when you're at home producing with dull and bright frequency levels. It's a matter of getting used to your own headphones. Hope this helped. - Enjoy your H.P research and / or which ever brand (type) and model you decide to buy. |

AKG K701 / K702 / Q701 ! I have a pair of Sennheiser HD-25 too, but they are really bad for mixing. |

The Shures have an impendance of 44ohms. So guessing thats way too low ? And i want a flat response headphone or else if i get lets say headphones that increase bass, when producing ill assume that the bass is strong even though its not right ?

The bass impact headphones is for your entertainment, to go a long with your DJ set. That is why I thought I'd embed the AKG link, respectively. You can also read through the companies models and judge what you think is right. tbh, everyone's opinions vary, meaning everyone has different opinions about headphones. " Get these, because they sound the best " " Buy these one's, all professional recording engineers use`em. ( Not true ) " The best headphones are Sony Brand " Going to the store and inquiring, trying out is your best bet. At least you'll be able to listen to the distinctive sound clarity from the music playing there and determine whether the H.Ps will suit for what you are doing in your music production. Check this link out ! If you had to mix a record with only one set of headphones, which pair would you use? Once again, good luck with your headphone research voyage.

Not many headphones with 250+ impedence. Most are all under 60. How does the impendence affect the sound.

The shure 440's are way way to bright and I find they lack bass. As for the 840's, they have absolutely no sub bass. They sound weird. Get the sennheiser hd 600's.

I did an experiment in the past... while using headphones, I slightly raised the volume on my monitors. Then, the listening from the headphones was better! I can almost use only AKG's. The only plus on headphones mixing is catching specific frequencies problems.

been in the market for a solid pair myself as my sennheiser hd 80's are horrible (no bass at all) and my dj headphones (denon hp1000) are extremely bass heavy and can be my worst enemy when making tracks at night. wake up the next morning and blast my work on my dynaudios only to sound like utter shit (huge issue i been having lately as i can't blast music at night hence why i have to go into headphones) been told the beyerdynamic dt 880 are the best since they have an overall flat sound but are pricey (250 bucks or so for a pair) but they have a low impedence (32 ohm) that apparately doesen't affect the sound too much so you can hook them up to your laptop when your on the run without needing a headphone amp. they also sell a higher one (250 ohm or so?) as well in case you wanted that. |

There are worlds between them ! HD25 lacks precise mids and highs and closed headphones over-accentuate low frequencies. Still, they are the best headphones for DJing thumbsup

| Technically they are all the same. The only difference between K701 and K702 is the color (black instead white) the detachable, user-replaceable cable and the missing "dock" that only the K701 has. The Q701 is exactly like the K702 only with a color difference (white, black or green) and is shipped with 2 cables (3m + 5m). As far as I know a part of the revenues of the Q701 go to the Quincy Jones foundation. These headphones need some break-in time. After 50 hours of pink noise you can hear the first difference and after 150 hours I heard the biggest change in sound. I have been using them since November and I rarely touch my Sennheisers anymore, except for DJ gigs. edit: One more thing to add : you should know that these cans need high output. It's not going to work with your iPod, iPhone or other mobile device but works with your macbook, your interface or your mixer. |

Hey, instead of opening a new thread i wanna continue this one.. Well the title repeats pretty much the same what i am looking for - headphones for producing The AKG Q701 is above my price limit. The maximum i wanna spend is 300$. I'm interesseted in the Shure 940, which is rather new on the market, has anyone experiences with these headphones? Beyerdynamic 880 pro are also well known for their balanced and neutral sound and cost about the same as the shure 940, so they would be also an option. |

Audio Technica m50's are great and in your budget. AKG 271's are good too. If you have more money AKG 702, Sennheiser 600/650 .

Are there any in ear headphones that would be usable? I've seen some around (eg ultimate ears) that cost a great deal more then what my hd650's cost me

Senn hd 600 or DT 880 pro(250ohm) are best from years of watching this forum, reviews, overall consensus. I use the dt880 and have 770, hd25mk2 which are not great for mixing. Senn 600 are a sweeter sounding set but not as comfortable. Both will really shine from a good amp. Ive had mine for sometime but still cant nail bass-subs. Monitors are still essential.

E4 are good, but for around the same money (e-bay) you can pick up UE triplefi 10 or Shure 535 that would blow them away.

thanks for your answers, More or less you told me what I expected after reading several reviews. I think the Sennheiser's and the good AKG's(except the normal 701) are a bit too expensive, thats why I would probably choose the 880 pro, which got similar good ratings. It's a pity that no one can report something about the Shure 940. I know that they are quite new, and that's why there are only very few reviews about them. You know, I was reading through a lot of threads on other forums and many users there recommended me to visit this site to receive qualified information. well my decision will be between Beyerdynamic 880 pro, Shure 940, and maybe the AKG 701(sound-quality is the same like the k702/Q701 if i understood that right?) The bad thing is that i have no possibility to compare them, cause no local store has them all. Cause you were talking about preamps, I will use the headphones with the Focusrite Saffire 6 Interface if that is relevant. |

I got a pair of AKG K240DF's and they're awesome! Very flat and neutral and my mixes seem to translate great on other system.
