Any TR-808 / TR-909 owners around willing to help?

What's the request?

  1. Programme 16 steps of one drum sound into your TRs sequencer
  2. Slow down the tempo until you hear at least 1 sec. of silence between every single hit.
  3. Tweak the Kick, Snare and all other sounds rather long and bright than dark and short, so that it's possible to filter and trim them later in any soft-sampler.
  4. Record every single drum sound (16 hits) individually one after the other through decent converters if you have. 24 bit 44,1 khz, no processing or EQing please.
  5. Record a short drumloop with some snare or clap fills in order to compare the results that will follow.
What's the purpose?

Ok, there are tons of 808 and 909 samples, BUT.., most of them have only a few drum hits. I'd like to build and share NI-Battery 808/909 Kits that sound much more alive or diverse than those stiff drum machine sounds we all know. Analogue generated sounds (not the 909 cymbals) from the TR-808/909 sound alive and diverse because analogue envelopes tend to be imprecise and.., yeah, alive and diverse! Every single analogue drum hit sounds a tad bit different, just like a real kick or snare etc. I will use the so called round robin technique in Battery to trigger 16 different samples of one drum sound from one drum pad in order to avoid the stiffness.

At the end I will upload and share those kits with the GS-community. If you are willing to help.., thumbsup

THANKS!

Better idea:

1) buy a TR-909 yourself
2) sample it
3) sell it 3 weeks later for the same price you bought it for, which should be easy

... because if you want more detail, you also want different kick settings, not just 16 kicks in a row with exactly the same settings

Considering the 909 is 27 years old, is it still safe to buy one without the fear of it going kaput? That's the only thing that's preventing me from getting one.

Why only 16? why not 32?

Or even better, 17 or 33...so when it repeats the "round robin" its odd numbered and thus repeated samples dont hit every 16/32 beats or whatever. Because someone is bound to pick up on the repetition round here lol

Actually you need to read Battery manual.

You really don't need to make round robin layers for such tiny (yet important) nuances of a bass drum or snare or whatever found on 808 909.

There is a Humanize option in Battery and it is doing exactly what you want. I use it all the time. It can shift sounds (per layer-cell)randomly in time, velocity, tune, and volume. You can add just a tiny bit and you'll end with same behavior. Slightly out of tune etc. There are knob to dial exactly how much you like. It's beautiful really. I checked and didn't see any other company offer this option. Not even Geist (note i speak about humanize option)

But even more you can create many layers of same sample which is tuned differently, tweaked slightly and add random layer triggering in line with humanize and done. With single sample..

Hey guys, constructive contributions are welcomed. But in this case nothing will sound the same as capturing the original behaviour of analogue envelopes and amplifiers. And spending 3000.-€ and selling these machines 5 days later is ridiculous, don't you think?

Anyone?

Don't think that this method will necessarily capture it either. If anything, the 808's bass drum is one of the more consistent sounds, beat to beat (compared to those using noise sources). You'll probably find that it makes a bigger difference when there are multiple hits in quick succession, since there's a nonlinear pitch bend effect. Sampling won't help in this case. Also any sounds sharing a noise source will have a specific phase relationship when they overlap or occur on the same beat. I expect the main benefit of using multiple 808 samples is that the hi hats will be less stiff sounding (though this depends on how often they're used in the pattern).

I recorded tons of samples from my 909 into a nice converter before I sold it. The problem is that so far I couldn't find a sampler VSTi able to cylce or random-access so many samples and put them into a usefull interface (=arrange them in the standard MIDI scheme in a single plugin instance).

Cool mate, would you share a few of them? You could upload a RAR-file via MEGAUPLOAD. I will do the rest and share Battery-Kits with the whole community.

Right now they're just continous 88,2 khz 24 bit recordings, unsorted and uncategorized. Almost 800Mb. I've also recorded the TR-727. If you want to take the time to cut them up and organize them I could upload everything.

Next you will be asking for a groove template.

And then the "how do I program a pattern like x artist" and "how do I make my 909 sound like this" threads will start.

There is a Humanize option in Battery and it is doing exactly what you want. ..
It might be doing exactly what you want but it's not doing what a 909 does.

Agreed with the first part, but if you dont want the real thing and want to use samples buying one to sell a few days later isn't such a bad idea.
Most 909's sound a bit different to each other - so by sampling one yourself you're not going to have the exact same kits as everyone else and chances are things will be tweaked more to your liking.

And spending 3 days sampling your gear in depth for someone isn't?

If you don't lose any cash in the transaction, then it's not ridiculous; if you want something done well, do it yourself.

Again you should check Battery or Geist. They can do all that in very nice way.

Yes please, if you don't mind uploading it would be great. Keep in mind, some one click hosters have limits regarding file size. Three parts (200-300 MB) uploaded at MEGAUPLOAD would be cool. I will do the rest.

Any TR-808 / TR-909 ownwers around willing to help?

I don't get why there's so many replies here going against the OP. You weren't asked to discuss whether or not he should do what he's trying to do... You were asked to help. If you don't want to help, fine then don't. But don't be rediculous and tell him to just go buy a 909 either... That's not helping.

Man I'd do it for you if I had 909. And, heck, I'd even make some groove templates so even more people might benefit...

You can do sort of a workaround in Battery, but that's not really it and I don't like the program. But I'll look into Geist, thanks.

My 909 broke, but I noticed someone already posted some for you.

I can do the 808 side of things if you want, just let me know exactly what you want done, in detail.

I have no problem helping out the community being new to the forums, although I've been in the industry for 15+ years...

The 808 also has midi if you want to send midi files for certain sequences you may want
