for electronic music? Not talking about the past, just mean in the last few years and the here and now...

I've heard Melbourne's supposed to have a good electronic music scene....i've never been though...

Berlin
London
Vienna
Paris
New York
Tokyo (Lots of great music coming from there, though arguably not such an amazing 'scene' for going out at night beyond a handful of big tech house clubs & a couple of niche places like The Room in Shibuya.)

Has got to be London and Berlin for me.

Have not seen much of the US but I don't believe they can have the same kind of dance music culture as London and Berlin.

Baltimore!!!

Every time I've gone to a party in Baltimore it has been off the hook! A definite sense of freedom. There's a cool trend in Brooklyn right now where a lot of DJ's are incorporating world beat/Afro beat with ghetto tech/dance-hall kind of thing. It results in a very organic danceable sound.

Istanbul has arguably the best scene in the world, unknown to many.

Berlin

Tokyo has a hell of a lot of spaces and diversity, reflective of it's greatness.

North America:

-NYC not what it was in the golden era 70s/80s when it was the incubator for world dance/electronics, but the gems that carry on the spirit using today's productions are still there when knows where to look. No longer any top clubs but the retention of a great outdoor summer scene with roots from the 70s thru early 80s allows it to continue as one of the world's outstanding summer dance locales. Like Montreal, the other top north american locale with deep history, the music continues to reflect the vibrancy of the place in general.

-Montreal - Back in the day, Montreal took second place only to NYC as the pre-eminent place to be. The two premier north american spots with panache and distinct and very different character from back in the day. Upon arrival it's obvious that the vibe continues and always will. Nice electronic festival in late spring/early summer.

-Seattle - big-time electronica scene.

-Detroit-outdoor techno festival each spring.

-San Fran-here and there.

-LA-not immediately obvious but huge demand for electronic dance is revealed from time to time at events like the summer electric daisy festival.

-Miami

You may laugh, but these places all have a serious underground scene.

Tokyo.

I love that city, everything about it is just amazing. I wish i could relocate there. Its super modern in a 1980's way, at night everything reminds me of Blade Runner.

No... he's right;

Kim Jong-il is mad for Drum & Bass. He flew Fabio & Grooverider out to DJ at his 60th Birthday celebrations in 2001.

Kim Jong-il - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He's actually had DJing lessons himself, and has some of those limited edition gold-plated technics 1210s & a rotary mixer.

Apparently he was well into dancing... but has had to stop now on the advice of his personal physician as he's had some health issues recently.

Although the state has very tight control over what its citizens get to become aware of, they do often allow foreign journalists to go there to report things that they want known... for example, they allowed journalists recently for some big gala extravaganza... with the real, unstated purpose being to present one of Kim Jong-il's sons as his heir.

Also, there are many North Korean ex-pats throughout the world (and even a North Korean university in Tokyo).

... So whilst many details of technical things like distribution networks are unknown to the west, lots of social & cultural information is known.

Supposedly, Pyongyang has a pretty wild club scene. D'n'B is obviously hugely popular, and there is also a really strong techno scene. Dubstep is starting to gain a foothold.

You wouldn't expect it... but Kim Jong-il is just mad for raving, and so allows his citizens to go clubbing as a release.

Totally agree. For vintage equipment, for buying music, for the perennial futuristic vibe and special character, it's on the short list of special places. Not just for a few days.

that's a stretch. sure, there is decibel festival every year and a handful of venues and lot's of people making music but calling it a 'big time' scene is a real stretch. it does go through peaks and valleys though where it'll get busy then die off then get busy then die off... portland is the same way.. seems like there will be 2 months when there are shows every night and you can't get to all of them then there will be months where there isn't much going on.

the NW USA is a tough nut to crack. i'd say LA has a better scene and it's easier to throw a party there and get people into it. the NW is great but takes time to find your groove.

In hindsight I chose the wrong words-the scene is significant in relation to the US. Frequency of events isn't the only measure though, especially as most places doesn't have things any more often. There's an innate interest in that city for electronica that isn't seen in most American cities. That fundamental interest is always something that I consider fundamental in any location and isn't that common.

Agreed about NYC-not happenin except for the remaining outdoor scene that no one here's much familiar with.

Berlin ya. London not so sure. It's not just those two in Europe.

i've never been overwhelmed by the level of enthusiasm except during decibel festival which i've been to 3 times and had really good times and heard some amazing music of all flavors.

i've played a few shows there and met some nice people and while i agree there is a good core group of people there doing stuff and interested in electronic music i wouldn't call it 'innate'. the west coast USA in general is full of people who are certainly aware of electronic music and 'get it' and understand there are different genres and more than just oonch oonch oonch oonch..

dubstep is providing a new 'nucleus' of fans for electronic music in a lot of cities.. so, regardless of what anyone thinks of dubstep it is currently the gateway drug and will likely be the spark for people (18+) to get into electronic music and start discovering things. i'm hopeful it will turn weird and open up enough people to the idea of different genres that it'll make room for more types of music to pop up here and there in venues.
