Thread Starter | Prophet VS love-fest!
Everytime I produce a track with the Prophet VS, I fall in love all over again... sorry for gushing! ![]() The amazing pad evolving textures this thing can make and then turn around just KILL on attacky basses blows my mind. We don't talk about it much, so I thought a good old fashioned Prophet VS love-fest was in order... I have the rack version, but wouldn't mind the keyboard, who else has one? Share your Prophet love! |

You don't seem to like it too much. You can sell it to me. I have never owned or played with one of these altho i certainly would like to. Currently there are 2 on the bay, one for 2K and the 2nd is @ just over $900. Like Soultrane I have owned the Wavestation as well. Nice machine but really I was just substituting it for one of these. Are they stable ? And what would be a fair price to pay for one? | |

I have one and LOVE IT! Here's some tracks - Prophet VS is the only synth used on them: http://soundcloud.com/antiquantize/prophet-vs-ambient http://soundcloud.com/antiquantize/prophet-vs-ambience http://soundcloud.com/antiquantize/prophet-vs-sfx http://soundcloud.com/antiquantize/prophet-vs-ambient-drones-arpeggiators

I used to have both the rack and the keys. I thought its converters gave it a much harsher sound than my ears(or taste)could handle in the long run. Cool synth nevertheless. Funny though, when I met Dave Smith in London a few yrs ago and we talked about this very same thing,he mentioned to me that not only he loves that "digital" aspect and grit of the VS,but that he tried to do something similar with the Polyvolver and the feedback osc. Cheers P. |

...I think that there is a cool arp that the VS does on the "Direct" album of Vangelis. Don't remember which track off the top of my head, but I remember it being pretty dominant. Cheers P. |

Don't forget Spacetime Continuum's 'Sea Biscuit' - the VS is all over that album! |

Like many other, I've long loved the VS but never owned one. Too expensive for me when it was new, and frankly still too expensive as they are somewhat rare on the used market. The VS is the (not so) secret ingredient on Pretty Hate Machine -- love the aggressive sounds Reznor gets out of that synth. |

Love my VS keyboard. I sold a bunch of vintage analog polys recently (P5, JP8, Xpander etc..) but I kept the VS if that says anything. I just love its sound. Very "cinematic" for lack of a proper word.

| The truth is...Dirty Halo and I are trying to artificially inflate the market prices of Prophet VS synths...once that's done, we've been guaranteed jobs in the U.S. Treasury.

Ha! Yep, it's just one of those synths that I don't think about, but EVERY time I use it, I just fall in LOVE all over again... I think the last time I posted was when I was using someone else's Prophet VS, but soon after, got my own! Someone asked about how much they go for, I snagged mine for $2k in excellent condition, but that was the rack version, maybe the keyboard is a bit more... I'd grab another if I found a good deal. This thing really is true analog heaven combined with Wavetable godliness, best of both worlds ![]() Sorry for my enthusiasm... was also going to start a "I love my Hartman Neuron" thread |

Actually the rack version sells for a lot more than they keyboard since it's a lot rarer. The keyboard VS is usually around $1000-1500. I sold mine a few years ago as I also didn't care for the digital/harsh part of it.

I too always envied the Prophet VS owners, so naturally since I couldn't join them at the time, I bought a Wavestation a few years later, then upgraded to the EX and also got an early A/D, love them all, and then the Korg VST really nailed it in software, yet all of them great in their own rights seemed to fall short of the "organic" feeling the VS gave me, when I used to go to the local keyboard store and play around with one there. Someday I'd like to add one to the collection, but I can't afford the quality/cost of it this year. I've passed on two VS keyboards one was just too grungy looking and the other one had issues and missing parts. When I get one it's going to be a minty one if possible. VS Owners - How is the build quality of the VS after all the years, what else to look out for? ie; battery leaks, shorts, etc. when getting one of these and are parts readily available today? I never really owned much in SC stuff, all though I was just, really getting into synths in 1984-5, coming from a guitarist that was corrupted by Depeche Mode. I could hear a lot of what I wanted to make as far as sounds in the Sequential gear, along with an Emulator II, but as a recent HS grad, no way could I afford them back then. So I bought cheaper digital stuff Poly800, Poly61, DX7, M1, D50, etc. later on I got into analog stuff with the Jupiters, Moogs and Oberhiems, still never had SCI stuff, my friend and MIDI mentor back then (had an amazing collection of stuff, also had no Sequential though he wanted a Prophet T8). What I loved was the VS at the time was an almost perfect blend of sounds from a passing analog era and into a new digital era, metaphorically speaking of course. As I recall it was their first Digital Synth. So you knew it would be special.

Loved mine while I had it - sold it back in '93. It was actually bought as a "second choice" to the PPG Wave 2.3 I wanted to get at the time - when I called up dealers, I was told that PPG had gone out of business and they suggested the Prophet VS as an alternative. The aliasing on the VS made things get rather ugly in the upper registers (no getting smooth high string lines out of it), but the grit worked in its favor for things like basses. I still get little pangs of nostalgia whenever I use one of the sampled Prophet VS sounds in Omnisphere.

Thanks for those. It really is a great sounding machine. You really pull some nice sounds out of it. I was a bit taken aback by the bass sound in track 3. Michenal mentioned cinematic sound. I would agree. I would describe it as very sci-fi. Reminds me of Dr. Who. Quote:

I love it. I've played it in a used instrument store, but never owned one. It is on my must-have list currently at position #7 Those are really nice examples btw

| better buy now before the prices go up... ![]() I kicked myself for not buying when the boards where $1K - then I saw them shoot up to $2K and immediately bought one in MINT condition. I didn't want the price to skyrocket to unrealistic proportions, and my beloved VS would be financially out of reach. And you know what? I think this synth is STILL a bargain compared to some of the crap they sell for $2K on the market today. |
