an e6400 question, and general sampling question.

My question is, how much sound quality am I losing sampling digital media like mp3s or FLAC? Like just running an audio out from my laptop into my e6400. I'm pretty ignorant about this, but I've got this idea that sampling non-continuous sound sources like mp3's, which themselves have a certain sampling frequency, could lead to bad sound quality. I'm craving new sounds here. Also like, if I buy a sample pack, how do I even get the samples into my e6400?

Convert the .mp3 or FLAC file back into a .wav file. Your E6400 should be able to handle those. There are a variety of applications that do that; for Windows, my favorite is RazorLAME which can convert both from and to.

Reconstruction filter takes care of that. You don't see speakers move by skipping parts of the distance, do you? It's the same with voltages. Besides, the step lossless > lossy has already been made; the only "loss" you get now is that the converters may add character.

Welcome to hardware sampling

Your best option is to find something that fits both in your computer and in your sampler. SCSI ZIP drives are perhaps an option, but flash-based media is way better (faster, bigger and more reliable).

SCSIforSamplers.com - New SCSI Hardware for your Sampler - go install a card reader, dump the .wav files on it, and have fun.

Didn't know you can get card readers for my e6400? You just made my day!
