Meeblip - Open Source, Hackable Digital Hardware Synth

Hey guys,

No post on this yet ? i am kinda excited for this little box - looks pretty cool, sounds nice and the price is a no-brainer imho =)

Created in cooperation with createdigitalmusic.com

"The MeeBlip, from code to schematics, is open source hardware. You can hack it, read through the code, make your own and sell it. At the same time, just because it’s “open source” and “hackable” doesn’t mean the MeeBlip is just for hackers. On the contrary – we wanted a synth anyone could play. With the Quick Build Kit, you can assemble the MeeBlip without a soldering iron or, really, much skill, in a matter of minutes. Plug it in, turn some knobs, and you can make some sounds. And if later you decide you want to go deeper or even change the way the instrument works, you can do that, too."

129$ !

and there are different versions incl. a full diy kit for 79$ - me likes

Then you're not really looking because there's a Soundcloud box on the CDM site, which is the same as the one at What it sounds like

That looks cute as pie! And no brainer price, not so sure I like how it sounds though. Care to share a real world audio example when you get yours?

Looks nice, sounds harsh 8-bit digital. The only analog part is the anti-aliasing filter. Even SID chip has analog filter.
The USB connection is only for power supply.

The MeeBlip Manifesto says:
7. Make sound on the go – on the bus, in the park. Get out of your studio. Get outdoors. Get into bed. Get some light. Get some dark. Just remember some high-capacity batteries, or the solar panel and some sun.

... and there is no headphone socket

9. "Quality” sound is overrated. Try making something extremely low-quality.

... until your ears get tired

Sorry, it is not my taste.
Get a Gameboy if you like chip-tune.

Just heard the demos, it sounds a bit like my MFB Synth Lite II but with a less juicy filter. Tempting though!

its been made very clear that this design is intended to be hacked. hence its initial simplicity and open source nature.

want an analog filter? splice it with a monotron.

want a headphone jack? cool. they're like $2 or something. get your iron hot.

obviously most of the jupiter-maniacs/greedybayers/collectors here with all the cash will miss the point of building your own affordable, open source hardware synth ... whatever.

I am building 2 Shruthis right now and developing a new filter board for it.
Anyway you are right.

I like the idea behind this, and the price makes it tempting. But the sound demo's didn't do it for me either. Still, we'll see what folk do with hacks and firmware updates in future. Hopefully it will get better...

For now, I ordered me a Shruthi instead thumbsup

For the price, it looks like a ton of fun!
...I've got an unused rack housing and some old/cheap stomp pedals I want to combine with this.

Ordering one now.

Yeah, we definitely need to record some better MeeBlip demos. I've attached a quick bassline that I recorded this afternoon to show that it's not all about thin, bleepy sounds. Will record some more as soon as our order backlog is processed.

In the meantime, I'm already plotting a couple of upgrades including a multi-wave oscillator. Will also be working with Peter to create some hacking and coding tutorials.

If I may revive an old thread:
Last weekend three friends of mine and me did an ambient session, of which you can hear a track here:
http://soundcloud.com/jebiel/dstf1
The Meeblip (through a Boss RE-20) comes in at 3:01 with a sound you'd probably not expect from that tiny digital thingie...

Another thing I didn't expect: I was able to do a fairly good impression of the bass sequence of "Der Mussolini" by DAF (including the wobbly tuning), just with the Meeblip (the original was an ARP Odyssey AFAIK).
Haven't recorded it, though, but it CAN be done.

Meeblip rocks - everyone should have one (no, I am not affiliated with anyone Meeblip-involved, I even bought mine second-hand)!

Cheers,
Bert

YES, I want to build one into my Novation Remote SL, there's empty space on the right hand side which should work.
