DURANGUENSE!!!!!111one

I have become obsessed with duranguense! I mean no cultural insensitivity by this, but I will assume that the majority of this board is as unaware of this genre as I was until recently.

I discovered it after seeing many ads for FM synths advertising the inclusion of lots of "Fat Tuba" sounds. It was funny at first, and we had a laugh about it in the ebay sellers are on crack thread, but some of this stuff is seriously cool!

It's basically a pop-infused update of traditional Mexican music, but all of the traditional instruments are played with mid 80's digital synths, mainly DX7's and M1's. There are lot's of crispy digital tubas, brass, accordians, harmonicas and strings.

And since it's derived from polka, it's got a whole lot of oontz oontz to the beat.

A completely different brand of electronic dance music. Check it out!

i worked in a studio that at times recorded a lot of norteno bands. it was always fascinating to see the drum kit and surprising to hear it sound good at times. the way they set up the drums is super dead. lot's of cardboard on the heads and just as flat as you can make a kit sound. the bands would come in and crank out an album in a day then the next day it would be mixed. sometimes they'd take a little longer but usually they knew the songs so well and had played them a million times already that it was just a matter of putting up a mic and pressing record.

mostly i found the music annoying and after ever session "i never wanted to hear an accordion again."

the link you posted just sounds like the same stuff but w/bad synth sounds. and how can there be a norteno band with out boots and cowboy hats?

some years ago there was the Nortec collective which took all the sounds of norteno and sampled them and turned them into electronic music. i found it annoying as well.

but there is a cultural divide when it comes to things like "traditional music" and i mean no disrespect for it. it just isn't my thing but i always admired the work ethic and the amount of touring these guys do. they just play out all the time.

You wanted cowboy hats and boots? Well, you got em, plus huge belt buckles, too!

I guess I just find this stuff charming because they use those old FM presets that sound like acoustic instruments and you NEVER hear anyone ever use them these days. Not even those casiotone bands use these sounds. They're like so taboo in the synthesizer world.

I far prefer it to supersaws.

You know how it is. The majority listens to products from the USA and UK. Been that way for many years... it's the biggest market. For my experience people are not too open if it's not in english.

I like "El Sonidito" by the Hechizeros Band - One note of Farfisa goodness . They are from Mexico, but I don't think it's Duranguense - maybe "Tecno Cumbia"

See above . It's understandable that you don't like the genre... but if you are going to criticize it you should at least make an effort to spell it correctly... Duranguense = from Durango

Love it!

It's nice to see musicians who actually appear to be enjoying playing music once in a while.

And it's nice to hear the word "fat" applied to something other than Moog-style bass.

I feel truly embarrassed now. Of course it's Duranguense. Still, I like the tuba sound and respect the skilful performers but the genre makes me mad.

another take on the style. accordions, Moog bass, and breakdancing caballeros...

edit: this is one of the least tejano/norteno sounding tunes by Kinky... but they definitely know their roots if you check some of their other recordings.

I'm not a fan of Duranguense.

...For an introduction to decent Mexican electronic music, I recommend Nortec Collective -Tijuana Sessions 1.

Here's one of the stand out tracks, IMO:

Yeah, I'm familiar with Nortec Collective. I've heard "Tijuana Bass" which, to me, is a thousand times cheesier than any duranguense that I've heard. It reminds me of those obnoxious 90's records that sampled lounge music, or those "Blue Note Remixed" compilations.

I always hated that shit. Stuff like duranguense reminds me of stuff like handbag house. It's F-U-N!

Plastilina Mosh's first two records "Aquamosh" and "Juan Manuel" are pretty good (if you "get" their sense of humor that is). These are good examples of their "serious" side.

I know... I guess I should have included one of these:

I recall when MTV stood for "Music Television" back in the early eighties and "Mexican Radio" was in heavy rotation. Drove me nuts, then. Love it, now. Go figure...

I am not a big fan of Duranguense music myself but respect them for what they do.

Now, if you like El Sonidito... you may enjoy this one:

I play musica nortena which I hated all through high school. I have been a fan of it ever since then and my advice is maybe have some coronas before listening to any spanish genre. lol

I would appreciate some advice on what type of setup is ideal for home recording musica nortena.

I have a Macbook Pro I7 and am targeting a interface and software next. I'm thinking the Motu 896mk3, I need those 8 channels for drums, but I don't know if I should go PT9 or LP9.

Spot on! It's just like some people needing to drink OE before listening to west coast rap or Mickey's if they're listening to house of pain. :P

Apparently, according to my friend who has tons of family in southern cali/mexico for domestic stuff you can find anywhere tecate > corona though I've never tried it and apparently they're both the bottom of the barrel of mexican beer that all the americans get to drink on mass import. I'm more of a hoppy/bitter european beer type though. (stella, becks, heineken, etc) I've drank corona a few times, and it was pretty good but the stella always calls me first haha.
