Juno 106 wow! - how do I automate?

So I've had a Juno 106 here collecting dust, part of the reason I didn't care for it was because I had a hard time getting it hot enough in to my Ensemble. After learning that its ok to just throw a gain plug in on the channel and boost it since its recording 24 bit, I've been giving it some more consideration. Actually after I got all the UAD plugs, it breathed total life in to this thing wow! The Roland Dimension D and Space Echo take this thing from dull to awesome!

Wow, I'm loving this thing, I guess a few months spent learning other things has made giving this another shot that much better.

My problem now is that its off the side away from my controller and Remote SL. I don't want to play the Juno it self I want to sequence and use my controller. I just found out Live doesn't support SysEx, not that I knew how to use that either.

How can I get Ableton to automate my Juno and map knobs to it? Someone mentioned MidiPipe to convert midi to Sysex but I still dont understand how that works.

Thanks!!

You shouldn't have any problems getting a strong signal into ensemble. Are you using the DI inputs?

Tried them all. Of course if I used the pre amps I could boost it, but I wasn't sure if that was normal?

Hi Dave,

Sysex IS MIDI. No need to 'convert'. SYStem EXclusive messages allow manufacturers to provide access to even the most bizarre, non-standard, features of each of their synths, while still using the universal standard MIDI language.

The only drawback with this type of message is that it momentarily blocks all the other messages, the time it takes for it to 'pass through' the MIDI interface. So the golden rule is: keep them short (a few Bytes), or use them before/after a song, to reconfigure synths and other sound devices offline.

I used to have everything on my Juno 106 mapped out into Cubase - actually had a virtual representation of the front control panel, with faders and switches. Worked quite well. Some of the switches were actually tricky to implement (damn near impossible in fact) as several of them would be ganged under one particular Sysex message. Something one doesn't notice when working on the synth itself!

Have a look at this web page which should - provided you find a work around in Live - allow you to send the appropriate codes to the Juno:

JUNO-106 CONNECTION

Have fun!

just to make sure, you did try the little H - M - L (hi mid low) level setting switch at the back of the unit, did you?

you might also want to check out the ctrlr editor. they have a dedicated one for the 106:

Browse Ctrlr Files on SourceForge.net

just pick the right version for your OS.

it's free and works (also) as a vst-plugin, which can be automated in your sequencer.

for further documentation: ctrlr.org • Index page

I noticed there's only a x64 version for windows, does this one function in a x32 environment?

Don't. Just sequence the MIDI notes, and then "play" the controls on the front of the 106 while it's being recorded ('bounced down', if you will) onto an audio track. MIDI's a serial protocol, and the processor in the Juno 106 isn't exactly Big Blue, so you'll run into sluggishness and glitches (and maybe even dropped notes) if you try to send the sysex in realtime to 'automate' parameters. It's fine for editing patches 'offline' but I wouldn't use it for more than that with the 106.

Maybe it's your interface. There is a switch on the back that needs to be flipped and my hs60 automates fantastically. I'm using AMT8/Logic 9.

you can record the slider movements in real time with a decent sequencer. my MPC works fine. to get smoother filter sweeps, use the bender set to modulate the VCF - much better resolution (the stepping isn't as obvious)

Has anyone here have any experience with Rekon Audio's Juno 106 editor?

When automated is there noticeable stepping?

I just started going through my options to see how I can go about recording automation of the Juno 106 into Ableton Live or Reaper.

Would a Kiwi Patch Editor be a better option? It is a bit more pricey then I want to spend.

I guess. The selling factor for the editor is that it allows you to record automation of the 106 into sequencers that do not support send/receive sysex. That is what I gather. That is what I am hoping, because i dont see why someone would pay for simply an editor when the keyboard has all parameters within arms reach.
