Jomox for Machine Drum

Thinking about swapping my MD UW MK1 for used XBASE 888 or may be even AirBase... What do you guys think of it?

Reason is the Akai z8 sampler I just got now becoming a huge on-the-go drum library so I'm using it almost for all drums and percussion (32 tracks of drums it's a lot!)... But I'm still missing the bend-ability of the analog like (or analog) drums specially for snares and kicks... Sometimes it takes too long to find a right sample...

So would you think I'm making the right decision?

i MUCH prefer the sound of JoMox to Elektron, but the usability is not as immediate and flexible as the MD

i have a 999 and while it sounds amazing, it is finicky about things like it's place in MIDI chain and a few other quirks/niggles.

x2

The ideal is having both a 999 and a MD.

Why not keep the MD but pick up the Jomox Mbase and Mbrane kick and snare modules?

I couldn't agree with Doug D more. I have MDUWmkII which I wouldn't part up with EVER!! I owned an XBase999 for about 9 months but for me personally I found the user interface to be borderline ridiculous so sold it. I miss the kick tho.

They really are two very different machines. For the money I'd consider a used 909 if you want 909 sounds even though it'll cost around the same as a brand new XBase.

Now, I'll probably get gunned down in my sleep for saying this, but have you tried D16's Drumazon yet? It's definitely worth downloading the demo. If you don't like it, then you haven't lost anything.

All the best.

D

For the sound I like the Jomox a lot more.

To me, at first the 888 is easier to use than a MD, I almost never use the 888 manual, but you really need it with the MD.

But for complex programming the MD is better and easier, once you know it.

Don't buy a Jomox to get the sound of Roland, they are not the same or clone.

And the 888/999 sound better than Airbase/Jazzbase/Xbase 09.

Agree with DougD, the Mbase 11 and Mbrane 11 are very good and can give you the Jomox analogue sound.

Thirded, or fourthed, or whatever it's at now. You will lie awake crying in the fetal position with lovesickness for the machinedrum's user interface if you part with it, but for a relatively small additional cost an mbase will reassure you in sweet whispers that yours is as big as the other boys'.

Well, to tell you the truth my biggest frustration with MD is with it kicks, snares and high-heads (I guess I've expected more of Roland sound and that's why I'm using my z8 sampler a lots with all those loads of sample packs you can get for nothing this days) but I love it for percussion effects... However again, with the availability of all those million sample packs I find myself finding and adjusting a sample more and more easily... Plus even when I hear MD on tracks it sound a bit dry to me... Specially with snares I feel like I alway end up doing lot of layering to get right sound... Kicks and snares that's my main reason thinking about Jomox 888... How ever I'm also thinking may be I should get the sample packs from they site and trying them with my z8 before making a decision...

I prefer MD + Airbase over 888.
But the best would be the sound source of 888 with the flexibility of the MD.

this thread is a bit old, but i'll resurrect it to ask: how can i send midi from my machinedrum to both the mbase11 and mbrane11 without either having a midi thru? i cant seem to figure out how to make that happen without using some other hardware.

You need a midi patchbay/splitter, akai make 2 models that i know of, midiman do a few and philip rees do a few. All of them are standalone (no computer connection needed), the akais have 2 inputs and up to 8 outs and feature programmable configs, the midiman that i have has 3 in and 8 out with simple 3 way switches on the 8 outs to select inputs. Any of these units offer a much better solution than daisy chaining multiple bits of midi kit.

Try ebay! do a search for midiman, akai me30p (i think the other akai is called the me60p? not sure though) and philip rees.

BTW the mbrane sounds great in the few clips I have seen on youtube! was it worth the bucks? sounded like it has a amazing amount of sonic possibilities!

great, thanks so much. i thought that might be the only solution, but i was hoping i might have been missing something and that it was possible without the extra gear despite the lack of midi thru on the jomox units.
