Album with Phil Oakey..

I remember he did an album with Phil Oakey (Human League) which was a favorite of mine during the 80's... 1985 IIRC... and the one track I really loved on that album was "Goodbye Bad Times"... which wasn't a huge hit, but I think "Electric Dreams" was on that album too, which was also used in a movie, if I'm not mistaken...

Now I feel old again...

Thanks for info.
BTW, "Kraftwerk - Metropolis" have the same drums as "I feel love"

I remember reading/ hearing somewhere that the bass drum was conventionally recorded (a real bass drum). BTW Giorgio did around the same time I Feel Love was recorded a solo album with songs in the same style, named 'From Here To Eternity'. Great album. My favorite track was 'First Hand Experienced'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqQzw...eature=related

Great thread...

The sound of the phasing / flanging on the droning synth chord has perplexed me for years on what it is. Its very big, thick and slow... almost (but not exactly) sounding like proper tape flanging.

I'd love to get some hands on time with one of the old MXRs and my solina as Life In Tokyo definitely has a similar sound. Also, I have heard a similar effect on the slower Donna Summer balad on the "Bad Girls" album (On My Honor... Compact Phasing A since it was tracked at Musicland?)

The Bucket-brigade style phasing built into the Korg PE-2000 gets you in the neighborhood too, but not quite...

Anyway, cheers!

Funny .. I thought Moroder used Roland System 100 modules for most of his sounds,... at least the E=MC2 era.

The remix wasn't bad either

DJ played The Chase at the first acid house party I went to in 1989, outdoors at a spooky old ruined tower in the middle of nowhere that is supposedly haunted.
My first time on acid too, I remember it sounding completely epic

As far as "Life In Tokyo" is concerned; an MXR flanger (grey one) was used for the phased Solina strings. The 16th note bassline was played manually (on a Moog modular) with delay repeats by one of Giorgio Moroder's assistants, either Greg Mathieson or Harold Faltermeyer.
The spacey synth FX was done by Richard Barbieri on his system 700 lab-series. Btw, most of the "Bad Girls" album was recorded in Los Angeles.

They used a heavily expanded Roland system 700 on that album (that was Faltermeyer's synth). The other gear used on E=MC2 included Polymoog, minimoog, Moog vocoder and ARP 2600. Sequencing was done with two MC-8's.

qft.

i was able to get somewhatclose to the og sound of the driving rhythm synth with some softsynths, if i get a chance later ill post about what i did along with the notes themselves

obv having the original equipment would be best but iirc what i achieved wasnt absurdly far off.

Great thread guys, and thanks for the knowledge Mikael. I was chatting with Richard (Barbieri) the other day, and he still has the 'lab' 700 system you refer to. Great synth and great times!

Darn fine tune. I remember listening to the single on vinyl as a kid.

Didn't he also write a theme for that Stallone arm wrestling movie Over the Top? That one was cool too.

One of the dudes that fostered my love of electronic music.
