Craigslist, ER1, did I get sold a piece, or am I stupid?

Hi all,

I searched all around for my answers, but still to no avail...can I ask two questions?

I bought an ER-1 from someone off Craigslist, and I think it is broken. When I press the accent or part 4 buttons during playback, the led scrolls the word 'electribe' and restarts....WTF???? Its also happened a couple times randomly, but every time I hit those buttons, only during playback, it shuts off. This has to be a problem, but I'm confused as to why these buttons do it so consistently. Does anyone know ANY context in which the ER1 scrolls its own name on the LED?

Second, if this thing isn't broken, I must be missing something. I can't get Logic to serve as a tempo/snyc master to the ER-1. Can anyone here treat me like an idiot please and just type the 3 or so things you need to do to get it working, just so I can make sure that I am not missing something?

So far, I:

Set the midi sync on the ER1 to external

Set two things in Logic - transmit MIDI clock, and transmit MIDI time code.

Sounds to me like it's broken. It's only supposed to scroll 'Electribe' when it powers up and from what you've got on there so far, it looks like you've got the MIDI setting correct.

Thanks for the help...now its time to find the proper words to ask for my money back...what should I say? I've never really had a CL experience like this.

did you try it out when you bought it?

Call the guy and give it a try.. that's all there is too it.

I don't know if it can be done, but try and see if you can do a factory reset on it first.

It's rebooting. Since you said it has also happened a few times randomly, it is probably a loose or intermittent power connection. Wiggle the power cord on the back and see if it reboots. The power connector might need to be re-soldered onto the board inside.

I am in Oakland. Yes, I did try it for at least five minutes, but I don't know, I must not have pressed those buttons or something...

I factory reset it first thing, to no avail.

I bought it from a girl who is an electronic music major at an all girls school called Mill College...she didn't seem to totally know what she was talking about.

I just turned it on, and made sure the power cord was rally snug, and its actually not doing what it was yesterday, so I don't know. Yesterday, though, it would consistently happen when I pressed two buttons in particular, so I'm confused as to why that could be, even if the power cord was loose......

Plus, the midi thing still doesn't seem to be working....

Thanks all for the help!

Sounds like a possible solder joint on the power cable...

Hey, thanks for all the help, I'm gonna return it to her tonight.....i have a question though: how do I get an accurate sync? I recorded a six minute take with the er synced to logic, and by the time I was done recording, the kick was almost on the 'and'... I'm using the midi interface on my profire 2626, no ext. Clock, and my latency buffer is fast....is it really that bad?
