A stamp is not designed or made to make someone a postman. Therefor, it is much more logical to assume that a person with an instrument would play the instrument.
I actually believe that having instruments that are not being played and used is a crime against art, because there are other musicians who might want them to play and use, and collectors collecting for the sake of collecting makes it harder and more expensive for musicians who want to use those instruments to make music.
So when I see large collections, I want to hear the instruments in action. It is the purpose of the instrument to be a tool in the creation of music. A thing not being used for it's purpose is a complete and utter waste, a very very sad thing indeed.

(all in good fun)
I do agree with the tenor of your post. But I suppose someone could ask, "Who are YOU to decide what a thing's purpose is?" "Who are YOU to decide what art is?" Etc. Again, though, just to be clear: I happen to agree that instruments are for making music, not for forming collections...

It's a good analogy because it doesn't matter, at all, what something is designed for. By your logic, a stamp shouldn't be collected either because it should be used for mailing, it would be a crime against people who would want to purchase postage but couldn't. Right?
The same way someone with a classic Ferrari babies his car, the big synth collector, too, might only be "taking her out on the weekends"

After we left, she asked me how I felt and I told her it was actually depressing to see so many instruments not getting played. She responded that she felt the same.
Yes, I know Chet Atkins guitar and Sting's bass are historical instruments in Rock history but still, it seems a sin that they ended up sitting behind glass just to be stared at. Someone should be playing Chet's guitar and making some badass country on it. Seems a shame for an instrument that made such great music to end up never to be played again.

Frank

I don't think having one keyboard copy out of the thousands out there will be a negative thing. Also in the end you can always have it in your will to be given to who you want.
Someone's got to preserve some synths in a museum quality kind of way for future generations to learn about them.
I don't ever think that when I see something in a museum I think, damn that printing press should be used, or damn that car must be driven. I think, man this is so awesome they have a model T for all of us to enjoy and see. It's protected and that's important. Some people are using their synths banging them up, loosing parts and devaluing them. Not all people treat them well and play them like that should.
Have a museum is a good thing. You should feel good about it.

| Newly recorded with RMI 300A
We've just finished an album that features the RMI 300A and we're really excited about sharing! When I acquired this electric piano a few years ago, I had instant buyer's remorse on account of its...very specific but not-quite-classic sound. But, all told, I think it ended up doing exactly what we need it to do... ghostly, icy wash! If folks are interested in hearing this instrument take center stage, our songs Birds of Luther, James and the Cold Gun, and Ronnie's Shells are good places to start. Just a JX-8P, and I've had it nearly four years now. I think I need to make up for lost time with something really nice, but everything's sure gotten a lot more expensive since I bought this. Everything except 8Ps that is.

Monos: SEM and ??
Polys: Prophet 5 (rev 3) and MKS-70
Aiming here for a compact but well rounded and complementary setup, esp. in terms of different filter types. So for that last mono, I'll be looking for something with a nice 24dB lowpass. Thinking Micromac might fit the bill. |

Only analogs I've got are:
SH-101
Alpha Juno 2
Also got a TR-909 if that counts
The only other one that I REALLY want is a Juno 6/60 but I'm not paying the stupid prices they go for these days. I've got bigger fish to fry at the moment - need to integrate my new MPC into my workflow and get everything set up and sync'ed perfectly.
An Oberheim for some nice pads/strings would be nice too, but that's one for the future.

. | I know 1 guy who posts in the em forum with a fetish for analogue synths. .. Major bucks.. A real obsession. And his music really stinks. Honestly, it's like the sh1t I was making when I was 12. Dire.
It's not the point that some collectors will just sit and stare at the synths. This is rare I think.. It's that they will make utter trite with them. (also rare, but less so)
I think the postman analogy was a good way of putting it.

Pulled the power plug in, as it was a bit lose, and then the Mks80 is dead
Hopefully it's just the power supply.... time to call Steve Jones!
edit - looks like Steve's website is no more, retired? | I think the internal fuse (and there should be one) is more likely to pop before the transformer! easy to check/replace. Good luck. Quote:
