ROLAND GAIA VA Synth

I know there is already a thread discussing this synth , but I though it deserved a seperate thread.

Here are the tutorial videos .

I've watched all the vids and demos.

Sorry...

Just has that same 'fizzy' VA sound as the SH-201 to my ears. (which I think would become even more apparent next to your A6)

No gas here

agreed.... but I have a reason why I am very excited about this.

It takes batteries... and its very reasonably priced, and its all knobs and sliders.

For pure super fat sound, I have my andromeda. Not that GAIA sounds bad, even with some "fizness". But as a scetch pad for my andromeda it can be great. Only 4 kilos, and 64 polyphony. And I really want a synth on batteries. I used to own a microkorg and I missed it because of this only reason. I love to move around. But yeah if I want serious "ooomph" to my sound, then I will use my andy.

Still for background sounds can be great.

Too bad its offers only 3 timbres. Oh well, but the price is right.

Also the effects sound very good.

I like that the squarest guy in synth history demoes this: "Now I'm going to play along to a Drum'n'Bass loop."

man the shirll/plastic sound of its saw wave, and lp/hp filters make me go:

im not against the whole concept - if it looked the same, same controls, batteries, but had at least some good, basic VA tone like Nord2X, retaining all the real-time extras Roland has (which are nice, but pointless with a shitty sound to begin with). that would be a very interesting option.

It's cute, but a true successor to the JP8000 for grownups, please.

+1

It seems such a shame that Roland are happy to keep rehashing the same tired old JP8000 era synthesis technology.

just clicked on the second demo . loving the effortless way he manages to plug in the jacks, in one smooth movement, must be a pro i guess...

for those of you lucky enough not to have seen it, the bit where he makes his own sound using 3 layers goes like this:
  • first i took this plasicy lifeless thin-ass sound
  • and changed the filter to HP and turned the knob way past the narrow sweet spot up until it hits this utterly disgusting buzzy area
  • then i took this "HUGE" sound for the third layer, sorry did i say huge? i meant to say "gusset custard"
  • mash them all together and you get this mulch! YAY!!
but hey i'm not going to bash it. (even though it makes me angry) the thing looks great, just not for any serious application. i mean i would've loved this thing as a kid, i loved my casio... i guess their market is 'shit bands' and kids and the guy in the burbs with a passing interest in music.

for me, i'll keep my SH09, thanks all the same roland.

So you can have 3 supersaws at once?

I can haz 4 at once in my SH-201 (albeit with just 4 notes polyphony, but who needs more than that for that kind of sound?)

Don't want to sound like bashing Roland.

Please stop using SH in your VA synths. The SH series are "classic", don't ruin it.
Nect one, maybe a JUPITER VA, hahaha

You know without actually trying the thing myself, it sounds (at least from the utube demo) eerily like my JP-8080. Of course the supersaw is what it's known for.

Well. That is a game-changer from Roland. Not sure about the name though. I think Don Solaris has it: should have been called the SH-1T.

Why don't Roland produce a v-synth for the masses? That might be more interesting.

Just to be nit-picky...names cannot be protected by copyright law.
It could be protected under trademark law, which is much more difficult to secure. There is a company named Jupiter that makes band instruments (woodwinds, brass, etc.) but I still doubt it would prevent Roland from using the name. Hell, Arturia used the name Jupiter.

That's because they're the same synth. The 8080 just has 2 more voices, extra fx and comes in a rack case.

I love the way this thing is bashed around here. Nobody has played it yet. I know, if it dosent have the filters of a JP 8, the oscilators of a memory moog and the modulation routings of a andromeda it sucks. gesh! Give it a chance. At least I can think of affording somthing like this. Might be a good addition to my humble workstation that sounds like passable analog.

Yeah not my cup of tea either. Styling is bla... However its a great price point, and if I was 16 again and starting out I'd love one. As it is I'm tired of hardware VAs, already have a Virus anyways.

I love how the demos on modern synths often sound like the same ones from fifteen years ago. I could swear I've heard that opening bit of music in the first vid on my old MC-303.
