Sci tom

Hey,

I'm getting an SCI TOM with a couple catridges tomorrow, and I was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible or if anyone offers a modification for multiple outputs. I've noticed that both Analogue Solutions and Wine Country don't appear to offer that option, so I'm a little strapped for where to look now.

Can anyone else tell me anything else I might need to know about the TOM? Is there any common problems, and how much of a limitation is the lack of individual ouputs?

In Victoria? Why yes I did. My original deal sort of went South a little, but I still managed to get the TOM out of it.

Regarding my question: I realize now the mixing between the four voices is done digitally, so the voices can't really be split to seperate outputs as with other drum machines. At least, given that I can use the same sample for all four voices, this is what I figure.

I was thinking of picking up the TOM, but then I realised that as awesome as it would be to have, it wasn't the right thing to grab now. I gotta get a sampler.

How are you liking the TOM?

The common failure mode for these is the tact buttons for the voices, they are not the same as the drumtraks and are very prone to failure. Wine Country no longer has them and when they did, they were like $25 ea. For me, this was a blessing in disguise since out of desperation, I started using mine with an external midi controller (Akai MPD) which I found to be a much better input device than the original buttons since the MPD sends velocity which the Tom will record and you can also send pitch data via the slider. All this is works seamlessly with the Toms sequencer (which is it's strong point IMHO) so you can roll the pitch up and record notes at different velocities, neither of which is possible with just the onboard buttons.

@Altitude909: Thanks for your input. I haven't really used my unit with MIDI to extensively yet, though I was delighted to see MIDI can be used to trigger different patterns within the TOM -- an incredibly useful and sometimes overlooked feature in my opinion.

@DGBX: I've really been enjoying the TOM thus far. As Altitude909 referenced, the things you can do with pitch with the TOM is really surprising and fun to explore. It's definitely not going to be my go-to drum machine, but I think when I can work it in somewhere, either alone or with another drum machine, it will be a lot of fun to use.

DGBX, a little off-topic, but I saw you post about picking up a Microcon (and were thinking of modding a MC-202)... which leads me to ask if you're in Vancouver or Victoria? I've been on the lookout for a Microcon myself, to no avail, and have been thinking of modding my MC-202 as well. Feel free to PM me so this doesn't turn in to a mish-mash of a thread.
