Sorry, but I don´t get it ...

Listen to the kick at the beginning of this minimal techno track please !

YokoO - YokoO - Jaguar Hunter (PlusMinus Recordings) - SoundCloud

How is this done ? Layering, attack delay ? It sounds so dynamic ... there is that random noise/snap ... sounds like zip-zap-zip-zap-zip-zap-zip-zap- ...

THX in advance !

Honestly, try and find a Pearl Syncussion. It can do things like you wouldnt believe! Their old, rare, and expensive, but its all you will ever need for nutty nutty kick drums!

That kick sounds 808-ish to me..compressed. I don't really find it special at all

you can get this kick with an SHo9 and i guess most other mono's with a hardware ADSR
  • ADSR= zero attack, small decay, small or zero sustain and small or zero release
  • full res
  • zero cut off
  • some env follower
compress the result

You know, I´ve gone thru over a 100 sample cd´s containing over 10000 bassdrums and I haven´t come across one like that, although a lot of peeps use it. Find a track that has it clean and sample it? Also check out my other thread for a wacky approach.

Sounds like a tiny bit of white noise before a tight 808.
(Or just a bit of dirt from an old record they sampled it off?

Also mp3 compression often add some noise in the beginning of kicks. can actually be a nice effect sometimes!

I've been scratching my head as well, I mean how special can a kick drum really be ... Kind of trivial if you ask me...
