First Track from my first EP!!

Hey Guys, I've spent a lot of time here over the last year researching synths, so I thought i'd let you know what I have been up to:

odey - Daper - SoundCloud

Its the first track from an EP i'm finishing this month. Its mixed and mastered, so feel free to comment.

There are a few analogues in there but they are subtle! Thanks to all that have helped me with advise last year and may this year bring everyone success in their musical endeavors...

Cheers

Luke

I like it a lot, happy vibe. Reminds me of Morcheeba, which is a good thing. The guitar and trumpet are very nice is that you playing? Would be even better with a good vocal, seems its crying out for one.

Wow really really nice! I really enjoy the drums, the sound so slick! And sparkling cymbals. (Maybe you can tell us a little about equipment used on the drums)

The whole composition, with the guitars and trumpet/horns(?)... nice stuff.

Congrats on the EP, good luck! Thanks for contributing with your music

Thanks guys...Glad you dig it. I was trying to keep this one instrumental but thinking about putting some wordless female vocal harmonies on the choruses. I'll keep it in mind though.

Can't remember the exact mics on the drums. There are some calrecs on the overheads, sm57 on snare and tom. A studio electronics mic in the hallway. I think the kit is a vintage ludwig but i'll have to double check that with the drummer!!

Cheers

Not to my usual taste. Surprised to find it on an electronic music forum.

But this is quality.

Good luck with the EP. thumbsup

Thanks man. Glad you like it. My main influences are electronic and ambient music. So this is where I spend my time. Besides.. Acoustic is the ultimate analoguethumbsup

What compressor did you use on the drums?

I didn't do the mixing but i'm pretty sure the drum compression was ITB then the drum buss went went through a toft desk into a calrec compressor. The whole mix went through a Manley Vari-mu. Hope that helps...

Thanks

Been listening to it over and over a few times... I might just buy your EP

Altough, I find the ending a little quick... I can kinda see a longer outro fitting in...

Anyways, great work. Appreciated.

Lotsa love,

magnus

Good stuff, reminded me vaguely of Dandy Warhols 'godless'.

Why don't you find a singer to work with?

It's begging for vocals!

Seems like a running theme!! I'm quite keen on keeping it instrumental but maybe with vocal harmonies without lyrics...

Thanks for the feedback

it's easy to latch on to something normal that's absent from a track eg vocals and say oh it needs vocals. no offence to any slutsi also think it could benefit from vocals. people tend to understand 'real' music better with vocals in (from a cultural point of view).

vocals are incredibly hard to get right for this kind of jazz. you'd need a girl or guy with the right tone. and the lyrics are very important, what with the need to avoid the dreaded cheese.

personally i think an improvement for future tracks would be, don't worry about getting a singer! tune your filter!.. you have high resonance in there out of key (eg 4.33);next time use the filter's key tracking function to keep the filter oscillating at the right pitch . it will sit better and the engineer will happily shove your synth line to the front of the mix! turning you from this to this

in short:
vocals are nice but you don't need them here IMO.

Thanks man. Good feedback. Quite like the discordant sound sometimes but I know what you mean.. and i'll keep an eye on it in the future

You aren't wrong about the right tone. Very difficult to find. And most people don't get the vibe or are trying to be Amy Winehouse or Beyonce. After many years of searching for the right singer I had practically given up. ( Although I think I have found a really good folk singer). I heard that Herbaliser had the same problem which is why all their early stuff is all instrumental.

thumbsup I really like it...

I can hear the "subtle" synth pad in the chorus... so what synth(s) did you use? and what effects?

good job

p.s. why keep the synhesizer(s) subtle... bring them more forward in the mix!

Thanks man.. Its more about the live instruments but I wanted to put some atmos in there with the synths so I avoided lead lines etc... The pad is Andromeda and FX are Prophet 5 and Korg MS20.

There seems to be something wrong with the waveform. It has amplitude peaks instead of being completely flat.

lovely harmonies on the trumpet in the first 1:30, kind of a cooled-out ennio morricone feel

supercool.

Funny, I did quite a bit of work with the Dandies around then and after (pretty much any of us in the Portland music scene then, did), it's the trumpet for sure... and laid back groove. (I know and love that work well)

And when the trumpet harmonies come in, it also has a bit of a David Sylvian vibe too
