What I meant by adult was more that MHTRTC seems to remind me of 9-11 years of age, Geogaddi reminds me of 14-17 and campfire takes me into early adulthood. Not so much 'Mature' as in their sound has matured etc.

On the flip side, I've listened to my BOC albums hundreds of times (how did we ever live before iTunes could keep track of this kind of thing?) but save for Rhubarb (which is great) I can't get into Aphex for the life of me.

Hey do you still have the file? I'd love to hear it.

Very interesting as I'm almost the same. I love BOC, and Rhubarb is pretty much the only Aphex Twin song I listen to on a regular basis. There are a few other songs on Selected Ambient Works Vol. II that I do like, though I can't remember them by name right now. But if I call up Aphex on my iPod it is usually to listen to Rhubarb. There must be a connection.

I didn't, but it wasn't hard to do again. You can see where the gain increase kicks in, around 4:25:

I think it's pretty clear, that song sounds like BOC before BOC. Same kind of warm fuzzy distorted pad sounds, similar key. I'm pretty sure that song must have been an influence on them. The rest of Ambient Works Vol. II is generally a lot darker or more discordant.

Perfectly put! BOC do musical haiku so well....its this quality plus their skills in sound creation/production that has made them so popular.

Regarding equipment - I am pretty sure they have a moog of some description on a number of their tracks, not that I own one but I know its tones and timbre from other peoples use and i think its probably a Minimoog. Older bit 'comprimised' samplers definitely feature heavily and as many other people have noted - tape, probably old reel 2 reels.

After writing this i noticed that the remaining portion of this thread really went of the topic of BOC sounds/gear! but i don't think anyone else mentioned the Minimoog so at least i contributed that! as far as which track or album is best i really like all their stuff!! i can hear development over the years and am still surprised by parts of their music at times, which to me is truly a sign of great musicality in a group and is also a sign of deep involvement by the creators at the time they made the music. Apparently BOC would put their albums together by picking their favorites out of many tracks or the tracks that sat well together in context of an album.
