Can't decide... Soundtoys or FabFilter?

I'm having a tough time deciding between Soundtoys and Fabfilter.. for delay(s) & filter options. Are there any others that I should consider, what are your recommendations? I will say that I'm not too fond of the iLok requirement.

I have both but would recommend the Soundtaoys, specially in delay department.

Uhbik by U-He is a strong suite of useful effects. I'd give that a demo.

I'm not a big fan of dongles either, but from what I've heard Soundtoys definitely rocks and if you look hard enough you can actually get the Soundtoys bundle for around the same price as Fabfilter's Timeless + Volcano. The new Decapitator plugin sounds SWEET.

My opinion but... If you want to be impressed with really 'out there' presets which you will spend hours flicking through and then probably not using, then go for fab filter. On the other hand if you want less ambiguous but solid sounding effects that take minimal time to work with your track then go for Soundtoys..

FYI Soundtoys were the first plugins that allowed me to finally get over (well almost) selling my Eventide Eclipse..

Cheers

Soundtoys & Fabfilter plugins are both fantastic

Easy to use, great sound and most importantly effortlessly useful in mixes

Wouldn't wanna be without either of them

Top notch

For the price though, they better be good. It's nice they have the Decapitator plugin for free demo right now. I want PurePitch, but $350 for it... The Bundle is a decent deal considering.

If you're serious at all about considering getting plugins that require iLok, you should buy an iLok for cheap from somewhere like an eBay store, and then when you demo the Soundtoys plugins you'll see if it works fine on your system and also I assure you you'll immediately realize the huge difference between the sound of Soundtoys's and Fabfilter's effects. No need to blindly rely on others' recommendations.

I find myself using SoundToys plug-ins more than FabFilter's in general, but there is one FabFilter plug-in I keep coming back to: Pro-C (compressor). It is easy to use and works really well on some material.

They work fine on the 64-bit Windows 7, unless you enable DEP for all programs, in which case the iLok drivers may very well not work properly and cause a crash whenever an iLok protected plugin is loaded.

Big fan of Fabfilter and use their stuff on every track - to my humble ears their shit sounds quality - intrigued by Soundtoys though if their effects are that much better....

either way, +1 for the FF Eq, Comp, Delay, and Twin synth.

I find I use the SoundToys Native Bundle more than almost anything else in my plugin library (apart from compression and EQ, I suppose). I consider the price a bargain for how good they sound and how much I use them. Speaking of which, if you're going to buy, PM me for an email of someone who usually gets a very good price. (Yes, he's a legit dealer.)

How does that work

Will a record company deny a mix because a fabfilter plugin was used and that isn't pro...?

Both have their place in my opinion. Soundtoys makes absolutely great sounding plugins, but at the same time it's hard to beat Fabfilter for it's mind boggling options and brilliant gui-workflow...

You can't really go wrong either imo...

+1 on brilliant user interfaces.

clearly nothing semi about them, even though the SoundToys plugs could be better (whatever that still means nowadays). no need to classify a companies hard work as 'not good enough' - very much like the arturia and rme bashing all over GS... for the rest this is a pretty solid recommendation:

Robert Babicz and FabFilter

"I fell in love with FabFilter Timeless after I heard it for the first time. It's really a masterpiece! Usually I use my Eventide Orville for effects, but now Fabfilter Timeless is the king here.

"Also Pro-C, the new compressor from FabFilter, is killer... I am a huge hardware fan with a big collection of analog EQs, compressors and effects, but FabFilter plugins are now in the center of my production. I'm using them in nearly every track."

Timeless and Volcano are pretty incredible, esp. if you take advantae of their sidechain, midi & mid/side capabilities. Try overdriving some of Volcano's filters.

Absolutely love both. I use Echoboy and Timeless in every mix.
If i had to choose just one of each type I think the Echoboy is my favourite delay (especially for the "extra" stuff like distortions etc) but prefer Fabfilter's filter somehow since it has midi control.
There is NOTHING semi pro about the Fabfilter stuff at all.. that is rediculous

SoundToys sound better than the FabFilter stuff to me.

However, when I demo'd the SoundToys native bundle, there was a problem with automation inside of Cubase. This has been a known bug for forever and a day- has this been sorted?

Really, It doesn't matter how good a delay plug-in sounds, if you can't automate it, it is worthless.

FabFilter is miles ahead in terms of GUI and preset handling- which I think is important for workflow- and they still sound very, very good. It's hard to compete with Echoboy though- it is so much more comprehensive as a delay plug-in than FabFilter's timeless- and it has a price tag to match.

YMMV.

Exactly the same here

I bought the upgrade from Native Bundle V3 to V4 yeaterday.
Have not found out if there still is a automation problem in Cubase 5.
I will post it in this thread when I know

I think they are both good. Fabfilter a little more clean sounding, Soundtoys a little more gritty, but both have a great, usable sound, and yeah, both are pro...
