disco/funk chord

Ok,

till now, all my music was made with samples, micro samples + bass, synths and solo synths etc...and I'm pretty happy with that, BUT,
I'm totally out when it's about chord, chord progression...

here are some tunes I like at this moment :

YouTube - "I'll get You" Classixx feat. Jeppe/ Kitsuné x The Cobrasnake EP

YouTube - Private - My Secret Lover

YouTube - Miami Horror - Sometimes

could you tell me, what's the common point?
What's the kinda chord used

minor 7th's & 6th's are good for funk.

The common point is a happy chord progression in the minor scales or disonant side of music theory. Just let your soul "think" & feel happy thoughts and first try "playng only with the white keys" to get the vibe on a major then try on the minor scale. Try some musical theory books especially search on the happy side.

Try arpegios starting with sol (G)... re (D) scales

Major scale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also another common point is the 4/4 structure, the drum pattern witch is an 80's disco new wave drum machine regular kick hat snare type on the same structure.

Then you got the cheesy happy vocals... some vocal processing nothing over the top like vocoders or talkboxes... (maybe a mix between a talkboxy sound and a real voice)

The rest is in the production the way they layer this stuff. 80's synths everywhere.. arpeggios... stabs of chords.. going down up and then in between notes of the scale to make it uplifting...

Try to play over the songs and decompile their root scale... (miami horror and classixx are in the same scale G minor and have similar progressions)

G minor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anyway there's no secret to this... just practice and train your ear.. you'll get there.
If you need tips more on producing stuff like this go to the italo thread here on gearslutz.. they used similar style of production back in the days... now's just more punchy and a bit cleverer but still cheesy...

In those songs, major 7ths and minor 7ths (not dominant 7ths), and an occasional added raised 4th degree passing tone. (Added meaning that instead of just raising the 4th degree as in CDEF#GAB (instead of F)...you have CDEFF#GAB). (But minor in these songs, not major as the example I cave). The last one is more triadic, so less 7th chords. (which is why it's less soul/funk sounding than the others and more poppy)

I like answering music theory questions...

Minor 7ths and Major 7th Chords are big in R&B Feels...

I have a prime example on my soundclick site, ill make it easy for you

SoundClick artist: eSPee The Producer - The Next Super Producer

the song is called "Cheating On Me"

this song is in the key of E Minor...

PROGRESSION:

Em7 (E Minor 7th)
CM7 (C Major 7th)
Bm7 (B Minor 7th)
Am7 (A Minor 7th)

and you get a classy R&B Feel!!!

to tell u the truth, its not the CHORD that gives u the funk sound, its the instrument...

Pull up a guitar on your keyboard and just play a simple minor chord, like C minor, play it with a funky rhythm and wallah u got the funk sound...

Great song. I really like the song, and since it's that good, the Autotune doesn't completely ruin it, but it could be better without. I will say that this is one song that Autotune sounds decent in. Still not a fan of it though, a little tiring on the ears.

And a good somber (sad) progression, Ill use One Republics - Apologize Progression

The song is in C Minor (the notes C,D,D#,F,G,G#,A#) are used

(THIS IS THE RIGHT HAND PROGRESSION)

Cm/G (C minor in its first inversion) the "/G" implies that G is in the bass position in this chord, so instead of C, D#, G... it is G, C, D#

Fm add9/G# (F Minor add 9 chord) with a G# in the bass

D#/G D# Major Chord with a G in the bass position

A#6/G an A# 6 Chord with a G in the bass

your left hand plays C, G#, D#, D... so in all reality the above chords couldve been written like this taking BOTH HANDS into account

Cmin (your left hand plays the LOW C, right hand: G C D#)
Fmadd9 /G# (left hand plays G#, right hand G, C, F)
D# (Left hand plays D#, right hand plays G A# D#)
A#6 /D (Left hand plays D, right hand plays G A# F)

Put those chords together and you get one republic's - apologize

pretty complex progression, but creates a POWERFUL sound... as a matter of fact, im making a new beat with this progression NOW!!! but in a diff key obviously

haha

P.S.

Major chords are happy chords... and major scales make the sound happy as well

The Key of C Major: (C D E F G A B) [All the white keys]

Chords That can be used in the C Major Scale [I will only list Triads (3 note chords)]

C Major (C E G)
D Minor (D F A)
E Minor (E G B)
F Major (F A C)
G Major (G B D)
A Minor (A C E)
B diminished (B D F)

as u can see if you want to make the happiest song is the world, you'd prolly play a simple progression like this:

CMaj, FMaj, GMaj, GMaj (repeat)

nothing but major chords makes nothing but happiness!!! but dont refrain from music the minor chords that the scale uses, wont make the track any less happy cuz like I said, its the major SCALE that gives the happiness feel, regaurdless of what chord your playing

okay, I played the Private and Miami Horror tracks, quite easily on the piano. Chords are not so hard to find actually.
But, I don't know why, it's more complicated for that Classixx track (God, I love that track so much!), and I just dunno why :s
I can hear a "bell" and the bass, but it's more complex when it comes to synth!
Any good guy with good ears can help me!?

Yo kem great advice , but make sure to adhere to proper enharmonic notation as in

"(C,D,D#,F,G,G#,A#)"

should be written as (C,D,Eb,F,G,Ab,Bb) in C minor.

It kind of makes my head asplode to see sharps when the clef has flats

try using an open chord...

open meaning the notes are spread out...

play C G C w/ your left hand

and play Eb, C with your right hand...
