Back of your rack

Hey all,

So I have run into a dilemma. Everyone likes to show their gear off from the front. But I want to know what sort of cable management you guys and gals utilize in the back?

I have a decent sized desk with a cable tray in the back but it seems my cables (audio, MIDI, power) all seem to still be messy.

Any suggestions please?

My rack/ desk does not have rails to mount anything else in the rear so management would have to be done by zip ties or other things.

Thanks

I don't have any pix handy, but I'll take a couple tonight and post.

Basic idea - run power down one side, audio down the other.

edit:

note that I typically cut my power cords down and put new plugs on the end. I have enough extra cords that if I sell a piece of gear and it needs a long cord, I can just replace it. I'm still in the process of tieing this rack down completely (as you can see by the stray power cords).

I also tended to use different color wire to distinguish left from right and input from output. I also label each wire with the patchbay number it goes to to make it easier to track down faults and such.

Finally, a friend of mine that is into old telephone equipment gave me a bag of those grey plastic standoffs. They screw to the back rails and allow me to run smaller bundles of wire down the side. Makes it easier to keep things sorted.

Power down one side, audio down the other. Don't use zip ties (they sound great until you have to rearrange anything), opt for Velcro cable ties instead.

edit: ya, what he said.

+1 on the velcro ties, i bought a stockpike of em a while back and they've completely streamlined rearrangement, not to mention keep everything tidy in general.

you can use zip ties just don't go nuts with them, since they're insanely cheap.
As far as seeing an amazing back of the rack, do a search I think in the remote forum,
No one's back of their rack looks like Steve Remote's

Yep. exactly. I learned that lesson when I wanted to re-arrange my set up. If I was a pro studio that NEVER moves then yes but yea I'm not.

That's why some racks have a back door - to close the mess. Honestly who cares as long as it works?
