Main synth on Ke$ha TiK ToK??

Hi everyone...

Any ideas what synth was used on Dr Luke's production of TiK ToK?

I know it's a long shot but this forum never ceases to amaze me with info....

never really payed attention to this song

it's pretty cool though

i like the bass synth in the chorus but i can't tell if it's a regular mono synth or a unison one

Well after listening this song i can clearly say i can program this kind of
sounds with my Access Virus TI, Alesis Andromeda and Nord Modular G2.
Saw bass in the Chorus!! anybody can do this kind of shit man TOO SIMPLE
I know Virus TI is quite popular in american production right now after Lady Gaga SMASH HITS which was FULL of Virus sounds.

i could remake this whole song using only sylenth 1

but like i said, i can't tell if the bass is unison or not

maybe just two saws, one being an octave higher than the other

sylenth was used on lady gaga's bad romance. cool right? but tik tok has that harmonic layering or whatever you call it. kinda confusing. i think im gonna have to sit down and play it cause it's annoying not understanding every note in a song..

I have to agree. It's nothing too complicated. I just like the tamborines in the chorus which seems to be somewhat his trademark for some tunes.
As for synths, any phat synth with Portamento can get the Saw synth sound. Virtual or VA Or Analog. Being more an Analog fan myself, I can get that sound (very similar) with my Se1x or even Oberheim OB8 (surprise surprise!) ... Even the Juno106 can get it. It doesnt sound Unison. Its just a portamento and the choice of notes he is playing. Straight forward (Little Red Corvette - Prince) like chords really. Try singin it....

I think it's how the sounds were compressed and EQed that makes them so special.
I mean, the portamento synth in the chorus is a simple saw + noise osc with a light hi cut filter to smooth out some rough edges.
But the way it was compressed makes the synth's attack really stand out and helps the sound cut through the mix with punch and clarity.

There's a similar patch in Nexus Analog Expansion it's called Benny Analog 1, but if you want to synthesize it any substarctive synth will do. Dr Luke probably used a Juno.

Actually, yes. His name is Benny Blanco and he is going to be the next big thing. He's done a lot of work with Dr. Luke as well as on his own. I love the synths on this track as well!

Your answer

Ok everyone. Here's your answer. Thanks to Timbaland, 8-bit sound is back! That means everyone in their mother is using all the old C 64 sid chip sounds. You can get these sounds from a number of different synths. If you want to go the whole way, go buy a SidStation by Elektron. Warning though, they are expensive. Luckily there is a great softsynth called QuadraSid by ReFX that models all the sidchip 8 bit sounds. It's very affordable. Hope this helps!

It doesn't sound like any unison I know of.

And what's up with Uffie-like vocals and VP9000? It's sooo...

Benny Blanco

The producer on Tik Tok is Benny Blanco and in an interview with him he says he mostly uses Juno 60, Juno 106 and the voyager.

Yes, thanks to Timbaland for inventing the 8-bit retro... He didn't even use a SidStation, he sampled old tracks. ,23
,
Some sounds in Tik Tok could be from a processed SidStation.

I'm 100% sure you can make a 100% accurate recreation on a Juno-2. It would sound punchier though

Synth at end of track (pluck sound)

Sylenth (bank 1 patch#36 KEY Pizzicato)... Not the main synth, but definetly throughout the whole song, especially at the end.... Sylenth is everywhere in electropop these days!!

Regarding other Dr. Luke production techniques on that song (and in general)...

I saw Dr. Luke speak at the "I Create Music" EXPO in April... he came with his engineer and they opened the Pro Tools session of "Tik Tok" and a few other tracks to everyone, allowed us to ask questions about how he produced it.

He said he doubles/triples Ke$ha's voice and uses the VocAlign plug-in to get that big vocal out of Ke$ha, especially on the choruses.

He said he had tons of tracks jsut for the Kik (samples)... he layered several samples.. they must've been intelligently EQ'ed

His signature thing, you may have noticed, is that Synth Sweep at the top of his choruses (and sometimes going into the choruses)... he said that's a sound he created on a synth... I don't remember which one exactly but I think it may have been a Juno? He slightly detuned the L and R in different directions to give it that big stereo sound.

He says he doesn't use VST instruments, Reason, Logic, etc or anything like that. No MIDI.. no quantizing. He uses real gear... he said he's constantly on eBay looking for new keyboards to buy. As far as drums, he may use samples from drum machines, but he doesn't program anything on them... he just drags the samples into his Pro Tools session and orchestrates everything there.

He's constantly screwing around with different keyboards, finding new sounds and recording the audio, and then puts them on his USB external drive as part of his growing library. Then he has all those sounds at his disposal when he sits down to produce/write a track.

EDIT-- wow i realize there is a video of it online, you can hear me ask questions haha: http://wecreatemusic.ascap.com/expo/...h-Dr-Luke.aspx

this chick is one of the most annoying 'pop stars' i've ever seen (heard the name, but never saw/heard her before this). totally worthless. from the comments here, i was expecting a lot more out of the song as well.

why'd you edit pretty blonde girl out?

but they must've cut off out a lot of the information like him not using vsts. too bad the video didn't show the actual session. how many audio tracks were there in that anyway?

and were you the nervous guy? lol
