Drum Machine Advice

Hi all I'm looking for some help. I'm after a new drum machine that captures the sounds of the old classics such as Rythm aces and mini-pops etc that have a "fluffy" sound or gives me the ability of using samples as well as creating my own new "cleaner" more modern sounds. I have been building my drum patterns using single drum hits in Sonar but am looking to get away from the computer a bit more with a device that will allow me to sequence and program drums aswell as sample, so that then I can then bring back the results to my desk and mix easily. I've about £1400 to spend and whilst I'd like to buy half a dozen old machines I can't justify the cost as I need a machine thats more than a "one trick pony" .Anyway I have been looking at the Jomox 888 and the Elektron MD uw but am concerned neither is suitable, the MD being to cold and the JoMox just being an 808 clone (can it do more?) Thanks in advance and apologies for the ramble and spelling.

P.S. I have seen other threads on here discussing the same machines but I could not find an answer that fitted my questions so apologies if this seems like a lazy bit of posting and my questions have been answered.

U could load samples of the old drum machines in the Machinedrum UW . Goldbaby has some great drum samples .

Goldbaby

A 2nd hand MD UW and a used DRM MKIII might be a nice combo , your budget would cover it .

i don't think your ideal drum box exists. if i had that money for a drum machine i would get a Machinedrum SPS-1UW MKII. i suggest you look into that.

I would highly recomend the Vermona DRM, Elektron Machinedrum and Jomox Xbase 999. They all compliment each other very nicely and would cover a lot of ground between them (synthetic, warm analogue, cold, huge sounding) - My personal favourite is the Vermona.

You can download 200 high quality sounds, sampled from the Xbase999, Vermona, Aribase99 and Mbase 11 drum machines at our website for 100% free:

Drum Machines 01 | Sample CDs & Sample Packs - Wave Alchemy

All of those sounds have been lovingly recorded through an API 512c pre-amp and will give you a great idea of the tones/sounds to expect from those drum machines. Hopefully this should help you make a decision on your drum machine purchase

Click the "free samples" tab to the right of the 3d image (next to 'cue in player') to get the free sounds.

Hey, nice clips of that Elektron gear. Thanks for posting. The interface to both the sequencing and sonic control at the same time looks like a lot of fun.

If it were me....... I'd like a Machinedrum and a Jomox Mbase11 thumbsup
Jomox nailed the ultimate kick like no one else (I reckon they even bettered Roland at their own game). But the Machinedrum got all that other funky glitchy stuff down so good! They should make for a great pair.. But perhaps rather out of budget unless you go secondhand.
I compromise a little for now with an old Jomox Xbase 09 (Again, great bass drum) and a multitude of other drum/percussion sounds I get from Reason. Reason is great, but has crap (IE, no) low end, hence the Jomox.
Actually.. While im here! I recently got a Tenori-on. You don't hear them being talked about much for drums, but it works out far better than I expected in that department.
Its worth the asking price for the 512 pretty flashing lights alone

Just get an MPC and load it with good samples.

Or an ASR-X. Those are cheap as hell, come with samples, synth sounds, and even really really really good effects processing (DP-4 sounds)

What's the "fluffy" sound you are interested in?

I think Vermona DRM MKIII can pull this off.

No sequencer, have to pair it up with something.
