New Track ....A bit out there....

Just wanting some advice on the mix, parts used, etc.

It's actually an older track I decided to play with for awhile and looking for thoughts on where to take it.

It's a bit strange but I guess that's my style.

Thanks guys.

But I would rather hear criticism on what you think sucks instead of just "It's Good"

I can only listen to it on crappy headphones here at work. I'll listen to it tonight and let you know how it sounds on my system.

I Like it alot dude. Its very 90's but I like that. The beat is really complex and detailed in a good way. I love the main keys..really nice pad and very cool.

I'm gonna say what I said last time which is to explore Harmonies and melodies. I thought the indian style instrument that came in after the drums doesn't quite work for me. You could really do something much nicer with a more delicate tone and melody that would compliment the great drums and other great textures.

Overall I don't have much criticism of the track because it is very good.

Incidentally what are you using to get that vocal texture? I am fed up of waiting for vocalists to do their work!!

dude if you want a criticism, first i'de say that you're firing on all cylinders and your at the top of your game right now. very technical and polished sounding. lots of great interesting elements. i'de say don't go off track and go ahead an complete this track without second guessing yourself.

however, for the next track after this i would stay away from the glitchy technical drum and vocal snippets style you have developed. try something different (to how you normally build a track).

for example, instead of the glitch drums go for an atmospheric simple grove, no glitch, maybe some crackle tweakage and pure sounding drums, a few well placed hats. intricate yet minimal. lots of space

for the next track:
go for minimal, not maximal.
go for maximum atmosphere
go for space
go for sparse well placed percussive elements
leave the glitch out
leave the vocal/atmospheric sample snips out for the next one.
go for using atmospheric samples more like smooth cycles with long attack+ release rather than hits.

i say all this because its often when we try and push in a new direction that we get the strongest results, get a little out of our comfort zones if you will.

as for the current track you wanted advice on:
like we all say, it's great.

Which vocals? The whispers in the intro or the gated female vocal?

I guess both. Reminds me of Xtal.. Aphex Twin. Always been a fan of that type of vocal, very minimal and atmospheric.

a criticism, hmmm... the ambiance is perhaps a bit too bright for my buds. low-pass filters on the verbs/delays to get a bit of a darker edge, and then maybe on some choice elements to vintage them up a bit. it'll score you some more 3D points as well

Haha nice try but nope.

You would probably laugh if you heard where I got the female vocals from but I'm not tellin. Not really that important though as its just a quick snippet.

That's interesting. Which parts are you hearing as "messy" in the arrangement?

I use Acid Pro 6.

Thanks man but you arent aspiring to much if that's the case.

I spend way too much time sitting here, trying to find and mold the right sounds and nitpicking on details yet it's never enough.

The part till the full on beat kix in...not "messy" as in a bad way,but you tryin to do too much! But then again that's always the part that bugs me about progie stuff. Being too clever..

Interesting, about the Acid Pro thing...is the midi side of it up to the rest of the bunch?

Works fine for me.

But then I've been using Acid since they were owned by Sonic Foundry. I am sure some other DAW out there might have some sick features I would love but I am just too used to Acid.

I do use Ableton from time to time for certain things but in the end it all ends up in Acid Pro 6.

Alot of people might say Acids' midi sucks but it's mainly because they dont know what they're doing. In many cases every DAW has a different way of getting the same task done.

I just say use whatever you know best and feel comfortable with.

well i wont lie I love the tone of your music. Has a clean crisp sound. So far Ive only gotten that with software, even though I use alot of hardware synths. Trying to make something new sounding is hard on hardware for some reason.

if it's too bright then wouldn't you want lowpass filters on verbs and such.. to darken them up a bit?

depends on the hardware but...

lot's of processing before and after and during helps a ton. filters, pitch shifters, delays, ring mods etc..

edit: but looking at your hardware seems like you have a pretty broad palette of tools to draw from. just shut off the one side of your brain and let the noise happen.

Nice man, reminds me of when I first got into electronic music around 97. I was a guitar player, but after going to one or two raves around NJ/NYC the mystism of the club/rave culture and its futuristic sound got to me. Everything was very futuristic and big in NY at the time.

Your song reminds me of those first memories getting into this shit, driving around blasting sasha and digweed, smoking blunts.

Oh and I really like the whole sci-fi future into thing going on and that pad.

One piece of criticism would be you could switch it up a little more with the melody/bassline. I mean there are many tracks in the same vain as what you did with it, its more of a suggestion of creative difference.

Maybe put another bassline in that gets a little faster/techier and keep the same beat, but add an element to speeden it up like a shaker or loop of some kind to push it.

That way when you come back to this airy laid back part it will be like coming back to your comfortable bed to rest and it will liven the track up a lot more.

Again more of an idea.

I think this is a bit overproduced for my taste in a sense that the actual music is now kinda behind the scenes and the effects gets too much attention. Maybe the filtering helps in that... Or maybe I'm just jealous because I don't have such production skillz .
