As a DJ for over a decade and musician, I got the game on the weekend and found it very cool. Well thought-out, actually requires some skill, and most of all it's fun! Mash-ups they did were even good. Don't hate until you try it.

Ive not tired this or Guitar - but I cant help but wonder whether time would be better spent actually learning an instrument and a skill...

Gaming is one of the least productive activities there is in life - so to Game whilst replacing a potential skill in an imaginary context of adoration...well...that is a typical example of the 'get rich/fame quick - with no effort or work - youth culture' of today.

Why not learn a real skill whilst also learning some dedication and discipline? Yeah and learn that true sustainable respect from peers comes from authentic hard work.

Its a bummer attitude but you have to draw the line somewhere and this is my line. Sorry my future kids - its the real deal or nothing. Ok maybe for 10-14year olds.

Excellent !!

I'll buy it, then write it off over three to five years. Unless of course it falls under the threshold, then it's a 100 percent allowable in the first year.

Actually these games have had a profound impact on musical instrument sales. Guitar Hero got lots of kids interested in playing guitar. They start with the game, and then want to do the real thing. Same thing will happen for DJ Hero. I think it actually helps. And for those of us who already DJ or play an instrument (like me), it's a nice way to unwind and have some fun using skills you have honed over the years.

Looks cool but one deck?? dfegad

I find scratching with my left hand is tougher than with my right because I'm a right handed, it would make the game harder. Besides...how much can that plastic molded box cost to build???

How many of these kids went out and bought a "real" guitar and gave up a week later when they found out it actually takes some time and dedication to play the real thing? "It's too hard, I'm going back to my video game." I'm betting the majority of them fell into this category. Any kid who is really interested in playing guitar and sticking with it doesn't need to be introduced to it by a video game.

Frankly I didn't find very much correlation between playing Guitar Hero and playing a real guitar anyway, unless you count the "strumming" motion (yeah right).

However, I do agree that it is a loads of fun and a great way to unwind, but I find absolutely no correlation to the real thing in either game.

They should have called it "Turntablism" hero. DJing is about mixing and programming. "Turntablism" is about scratching and tricks. I guess that might have not sold as well.

Slacker Hero!

Compete with your friends to see who can score the best weed and then lay around and watch TV all day. Order pizza, (bonus points for getting the delivery dude high for a tip). Sell and trade Xbox games to advance.

^+1!
When I was 10 my parents asked me if I wanted the first Nintendo game system or my first guitar for christmas... twenty two years later, I am an audio engineer. Guess which one I picked... The same twenty-two years later some of my friends from that period are still on a couch playing video games -guess which one they picked....

I teach in-home guitar lessons, and nothing drives me crazy like showing up to a house and seeing my student playing guitar hero instead or warming up for his/her lesson. It's those kids I know not to get too invested in, and to just teach them whatever song they want to learn that week. That being said, I can't blame Guitar Hero specifically. Kids (at a certain age) that are still big into video games are never going to put the time needed into learning an instrument, regardless of the shape of their controller. Sure the irony of kids playing guitar game instead of playing guitar kills me, but it's unfair to say Guitar Hero has any affect on the number of quality musicians the world sees. Before Rock Band, it was Halo sucking up their practice time. From my experience, those that truly want to play will, regardless of what game their friends are all playing.

Do you lose or gain points for selling/trading your plastic guitar game controller in Slacker Hero?

Why did they skip the Synthesist Hero and went straight to DJ Hero?

Answer: Synthesizer emulations on (game) computers do suck!

We're all just jealous because they haven't come out with Synth Hero yet.

You know you want to click shiny, candy-colored buttons along with the intro to "The Meaning of Love", out-score your friends on "Are 'Friends' Electric?", and be the operator of your "Pocket Calculator".

I actually agree with you. I played games (NES, then SNES, then N64, computer) like crazy when I was little (~8-10 years old). Then by the time I was 15 I realized I was completely wasting hours/days/weeks/months of my life. I switched almost all my energy to music, as well as other, more 'productive' endeavors, and I certainly think I'm much better off all these years for it.

Video games can be fun. But they can also been a largely pointless void.

At least with physical games (actual sports - basketball, baseball, etc - or even Wii Fit) you can say you're getting physical exercise, which is fantastic in our obesity-filled world. What can you say you are getting out of an XBOX gamepad or stupid plastic guitar? Maybe a bit of a diversion and perhaps some coordination exercise, but I think there are better ways to get both.

On the other hand, though, if gaming continues to grow, I would not be surprised if eventually people may actually be able to game for a living. Already, in Korea, they've had for years giant gaming competitions with 6 figure prize winnings. Supposedly the top gamers are actually quite famous over there and 'train' for these competitions by gaming full time. I imagine we will start seeing similar competitions over here.

Regardless, I'd rather play my actual drums/guitar, go out with some friends, work out, etc.. But I suppose some people are simply sedentary by nature, whether they want to be or not, and that will never change.

At this point, I'm not particularly opposed to gaming. I actually just ordered a USB NES controller so I can play some of my old Nintendo classics like Metroid and Mega Man on my laptop for some retro nostalgia.

Anything in moderation is usually fine. It's just that when it starts adding up, day after day, you will start paying for it.

I on the other hand like nothing more than a good 360 session after my 9-5 when ive also crammed in some music work and then put kids to bed or been for a ride or run ,or giving my lad a game of fifa after hes been to football school or read a book 2 years above his age or been to swimming club or ridden his bike.

In moderation there is nothing i mean nothing wrong with playing games.

It's not about games being bad its about parents not spending time with their kids and preferring them out the way playing games so they have an easy life.

Personally i think dj hero looks a right laugh and its a game to play and have fun with.

So, what do you guys think of the drumming in Rock Band? I actually thought that one may be OK, in a musical practice sense. I should say that I have never played anything from this series.

I guess its OK from the sense of learning to hit a pad on beat, but thats about it. The pads are not really velocity sensitive, so there is no real dynamics. This may actually be worse for beginner drummers because the one of the first things you should learn is you don't have to hit the drums as hard as possible.

In addition, the drums are not placed in a way to emulate a real drum set, so I don't see how it helps you there either.
