I've witnessed many a bad beatmatch kill the vibe on the dancefloor. Alot of people who go out clubbing are quite a bit more discerning than you might realise .

Personally, I find it quite euphoric to spin some high energy drum and bass . Cutting and weaving inbetween two perfectly beatmatched songs, using effects and looping on the fly, transitioning from one breakdown into another to build the tension...I dunno man...it's instantly gratifying and is plain fun.

And different to sitting down in front of a stale keyboard or staring for hours at a DAW

If anyone cares, heres a little mix I threw together a couple of days ago. I don't actually spin at clubs or anything, and I probably won't ever have that opportunity, but regardless, it's something I have fun just doing on my own . Think of it as an interactive listening experience :D

I would love to get some 1200's, but vinyl is a very expensive hobby!

I could go the timecoded vinyl route, but that's just not quite the same...

Going out to a big club for a night out with a headline DJ is of course a great thing and if he's using turntables to make it happen then more respect to him. This is a totally different scenario to countless bars and private clubs and parties I go to where they have a 'DJ' and more often than not there is a guy or girl with a laptop occasionally clicking 'play' on cross faded list of tracks in most of these cases the 'audience' are none the wiser whether its a play list on an ipod or a realtime mix, nor does it seem to be any different to them. Still, its better than the bad Karaoke style singers - but there again they can be hilarious for all the wrong reasons !
So you went to a place that had a bad DJ so all DJs not "headling" or using laptops are bad? I really don't understand.

funny how dj'ing as an art gets judged by the two buck amateurs playing at 'bars' and 'private parties' and not by those that make a professional living out of it, who have extremely high standards, and who clearly differentiate themselves from the 'prostitutes' you're referring to.

should all live musicians be judged by the joker who plays his casio on the countless ferries around the world?

should painters be judged by the work quality of the 10 yr old kid who found a spraycan in his dumpster, and wrote a barely readable poor excuse for his name on the sidewalk?

should the quality of an instrument be judged by the merits of someone who has no idea how to use them?

its all about perspective... the bar dj has one mission and that is to finish the night with an epic classic like New York New York. the professional dj has worked hard to get where he has, 99% of the time through production. its extremely rare for dj's to break through just because theyre dj's... i can name maybe 4 or 5 in the higher end electronic scene...

if after that, the production merits, artistry or musical knowledge of electronic musicians are questioned, thats a whole different story all together... but, you agreed to the difference already, so just felt like writing something for the f of it
