NI Maschine on PPC G5 ??

The website says Intel Mac in the requirements, but i have read some reports of people using it on PPC ?

Is this a CPU hog ? n will it work on G5's ?

No, Maschine won't work on a G5.

Doesn't it have to do more with the OS than the hardware requirements?

The latest version (1.7 something) only works on Snow Leopard and newer ...

It's possible older versions could work provided you have the correct OS and the original install disk ...

You can't install any OSX version post leopard onto a G5. Apple makes it's money from hardware, and advances its OS in order to require people to buy new gear in order to run the latest software. Now that the iPhone and iPads are the main revenue drivers, the update the OS so that only the newest versions work with the new Phones and pads. There is no technical reason why you shouldn't be able to sync the newest iPhone to a PPC generation computer, but there is money grubbing reasons.

A dual G5 has enough power to run any modern audio software. You might max out at 1/2 the number of plugins compared to the newer intel macs, but that's irrelevant for making music.

Yes ... One really must admire the obsolescence Apple builds into their products ...

That's why I'd say that users should get the best software for their computer, when it is current, and stick with it. Don't expect updates to work indefinatively while the computer functions. Factor this in while buying a computer. That's simply the reality of a high turnover consumer society.

Also factor in that it's sometimes better to buy second best - so much cheaper - so you can replace it after 3-4 years. Sad reality, but more than that is an eternity for computers - regardless of if it still works.

For the intents and purposes of business, that G5 stopped working the moment software went Intel-only. Even Apple acknowledged the Core left the G5 in the dust, and the i7 leaves the Core in the dust again. Raw transistor count does that kind of thing.

IIRC Maschine was supported on PPC until 1.5. So 1.1 and earlier versions should work.

The plus side of it is that you can buy the top of the line professional solution from 5 years back for next to nothing, as there is almost no market for g5 era power macs, being that pro have to keep up with the industry, and nobody has 'ppc nostalgia.' For this reason you can pick up great deals particularly if you're into video editing. a dual g5+kona 2 card can do anything necessary to edit a movie, and plenty fast, but you can buy that setup for less than 1/10th the price of the next generation hardware.

For years now computers have been plenty fast enough for most any real world application (where you are not having to compete with other professionals for cpu power, like who can render this commercial faster).
