Which analog synth for me?

I think I want at least one true analog synth in my collection instead of a VA synth. I want it mainly for synthpop stuff, so this is making me lean toward Roland for that. Another thing is that I don't want to spend much more than $500 or so. Two synths that I see are popular here are the Juno 60 and the Juno 106, and from what I can tell both are fairly cheap and in that price range. I don't know the differences between the two and which one I should go after. Another thing is that I would love for it to have midi capability because I like to sequence a bit. As much as I would like to have a Jupiter, I think they're all out of my price range, so maybe a Juno will hold me off.

If anyone has any thoughts or recommendations I'd be glad to hear

the juno's are fabulous synths, definitely the synth i regret selling the most (although it was to pay for a super jupiter). some say the juno 60 is 'punchier' than the 106 having never played the 60 dunno. you may be able to find the mks-80 super jupiter without a programmer for around $800 if you look hard enough..

If you're gonna look at the Juno's then it's obligatory that the Akai AX60 be mentioned. Very similar to the 106 but with a VCO instead of a DCO, frequency modulation for the filter, and much higher resonance.

Actually it just dawned on me that there are multiple synths in the Juno family. 60, 106, 6... probably some others. I don't know the difference between all of them and which I should look into. It would be nice if it had midi/a sequencer, and I'd use it mainly for synthpop stuff.

Juno 60 w/ DCB to MIDI converter or Juno 106. They're both different sounding and priced!

Watch the 106's voices. Can't beat that simple nice Juno sound w/ that obligatory chorus.

Also look out for the JX3P - programmer extra.

How about one of these?
- Yamaha CS-15 (Vintage Synth Explorer - Yamaha CS-15) (YouTube - Yamaha CS-15 Video Demo Part 1)
- Yamaha CS-10 (Vintage Synth Explorer - Yamaha CS-10)
- Yamaha CS-40m (Vintage Synth Explorer - Yamaha CS-40m) (YouTube - Yamaha CS-40M)
- Teisco 110-F (Vintage Synth Explorer - Teisco Synthesizer 110-F)

They don't have midi, but probably have CV/gate, so you can buy a cheap MIDI to CV/gate box to control it.

I hate my 106. I would sell it in a heartbeat but it's not even worth the trouble for $200

I just think it's very thin, and isn't really capable of too many sounds. Mine's just in ok condition so that could have something to do with it

Whenever Juno 60s come up, there are always a few people touting the Korg Polysix as a good alternative (but they do seem to go for a bit more these days; also, they use VCOs, unlike the DCOs of the Juno series. But watch out for the leaky battery problem...).

I wouldn't classify a 106 as 'thin' at all. Yes it is somewhat limited but that's its appeal.

Everyone can have their own opinion

$500 synths

I bought an Obeheim Matrix 6R and a Sequential Six Trak for under $500 for the two pieces.

I like the sound of the Six Trak in stack mode (6 osc monophonic) and layer it with the Oberheim for some pretty fat and wet sounds. This combo sounds so big and lush that I sold my SE-1.

I liked the Matrix 6R so much I also bought a Matrix rack module.

I love those older instrument sounds, they sound so much bigger than any of the plugin software synths I've tried.

Good luck in your quest.

we just prepared another juno-60 for a buyer. every time i play one, im amazed by how great it sounds. its definitely not the most flexible synth, but tonal quality is excellent. ive had an mks7 in my studio for juno-106 duties for many years, but i think im going to add a juno-60 soon. the only issue (which has always been an issue) is space. does anyone have any advice for hanging synths from the ceiling? making sure it doesnt fall and kill me would be my biggest concern.
