seeking advice on OB8...

Hi all

Just bought an OB8 few days ago. I found out later that midi (retrofit) is not working as advertised and the modulation lever seems broken as well(unless I am the one who's doing something wrong...).

Really I could live without midi (although I would use it for sure..) but the modulation problem just piss...

I could take it back but as I didn't pay premium price for it (they seem to go near $2000 these days...) I thought I might keep it.

other than those mentioned problems, I would say the synth is in fairly good condition so...

how do you guy's think it's worth?

thanks

d

I think the OB-8 is a worthwhile synth. For me, if I got a particularly good deal, I wouldn't mind paying something to get it fixed. I usually fix these things myself, but that's not everyone's thing. Just get some quotes, and see if it makes sense for you.

Bump? Either fix it or get it fixed. Even if you decide to resell it, you're going to need to get it fixed first anyway, and you'll have bad karma if you let a classic Oberheim sit there suffering with a medical condition like that.

Both of those should be pretty easy fixes, as such things go. Once you have to start dealing with things like keyboard-scanner-demultiplexer-clocking-whatchamacallit-whosits, then it gets annoying.

OB-8 sounds incredible! I had one for a little while and sold it on. Should have kept it.. would have saved me a lot of looking for cheaper alternatives. It's clean, yes, but so nice, especially compared to more present-day offerings.

Do you know if the mod lever is active? There is a button on that control panel that will turn on/off the mod. Just saying, 'never know.

Otherwise, yes the OB-8 is a worthwhile synth. I regularly have access to an OB-Xa as well and while I find there's some slightly better mojo with the Xa, the 8 is way more reliable and usually has midi installed. Personal preference would be the OB-8.

sorry for taking so long to answer...

I had the chance to play a little more with the synth and it's definitely a keeper . Might not be a OB-Xa but it has sounds one could use...

I was looking for a p600, but saw this one and jumped on the occasion. Just wanted to know if it worth the 1500 I paid considering the unexpected problems it came with. I guess this is not such a bad deal after all, considering the insane prices the OB's are going nowadays.

I'm wondering which button you're referring to..?? I'd say you just have to assign the lfo to either osc1 or osc2 and the mod lever should work. I'd be glad to be wrong tho...

thanks for your help
