Side Chain compression question

Using ableton 7.0 - Ive got a side chain compressor on a pad and a high pass filter being automated on the kick (triggering the side chain). It seems to me that the side chain compression diminishes as the high pass filter sweeps on the kick.

I want to be able to still hear the side chain compressor in full effect on the pad, even when the high pass filter sweep on the kick. Is there a way to achieve this? Do I need a muted kick triggering the side chain?

thanks!!

Yes. Most people follow this pattern because it also allows you to have the effect going even when the bass drum is not playing in the track.

but I thought a second kick channel was not needed in using abelton? I know I had to use a 2nd kick channel muted in cubase..

what you're refering to is anything prior to ableton 7 you had to have a trigger channel for everything u wanted sidechained. ableton 7 now lets 1 channel be the trigger for multiple channels.

most people have 2 kick channels, 1 muted for the sdiechain and the other the actual kick drum of the record. if you have a breakdown how are you going to keep things sidechained?

It is if you're filtering all the lows out of the kick drum with a high-pass filter and expecting it to control the sidechain input of a compressor on your pad sound in the same way as it does without the filter. Most of the energy in the kick sound is in the lows, so if you take out the lows with the filter, it's not going to be providing a very strong signal to use as your sidechain input.

Its ok guys I found the solution on another forum ---> In the compressor where you select sidechain, underneath that is a selection for "pre FX". You have to change it from "Post FX" to Pre FX, so that the side chain still works 100% through the effect of the high pass filter or any other effect, thus requiring only ONE kick channel. easy peasy!

Tip from me. Keep your main audible kick as a nornal 4/4 kick.

Then programme the silent kick, that triggers the sidechain inputs, to play a different pattern. Works well if you sidechain compress reverb or delay returns this way as well.
