Thread Starter | Help with deciding new synth - Deep house/Techno
Hi Peeps
Long time since last post, righty im in the market for a new hardware synth, im selling a moog voyager as I havent used it enough and it wasnt what I was really after. Im now looking for a nice poly synth for lush pads and leads, love my dubby delayed chords etc My production style is deep House and Techno, for examples im into mike Huckaby, Theo parish, brothers vibe, dan berkson, two armadillos, Rick wade etc
Basically nice, deep and rich in texture
I love the waldorf wave but thats right out of mine and alot of others leagues, i have about 1200gbp to spend, im interested in hearing suggestions i guess im after some sort of a detroit classic
are any of the cheaper waldorfs capable of getting any where near the mighty wave?
Cheers Guys

I sold my Voyager long ago cause it wasnt what I expected for tech house and got an Andromeda, I love the A6, the fx are not the best so I bypass them and use a cheap Lexicon box with it....the sounds of the A6 are amazing .

I would say the A6 can sound like a Virus but with balls

If you like Waldorf and have a midi controller, get a Microwave version 1.
Its no fun to program from the front panel, but with a midi controller, its cool.
Its got analog filters, so it sounds different to the newer Microwaves.
Does awesome Bass, great pads, and weird wavetable-analog hybrid madness. Great if you like it weird
Poly with multiple outputs.
They go quite cheap, like £200, so you have money left towards an A6 later.
Highly underrated IMO.

Maybe this is transference--pushing ones desires on others--but the spectralis, while spendy, seems pretty dope.
Andy is great of course. YouTube - Spectralis Hybrid Synth Groovebox Demo |

For the artists you mention, I would recommend the Korg Polysix (hardware) or the Korg Legacy Analogue Edition. Nord Lead 2x or Wave also has some nice pads and stabs for deep house.

I don't think the synth matters that much in those dubby delayed chords, basicly any half decent polysynth will do.
That sound is all about the delay, having a quality one and setting it exactly right, so that it "dances" along the rest of the music. A quality filter (if the synth doesn't have one) before the delay is probably a good idea also, something like the Moogerfooger stomp box.
I don't think any synth does those dubby chords straight out of the box, the delay (which most synths don't have in high enough quality) makes or breaks the sound IMO.

the user interface is very confusing at first but the sound has kept me from selling it.

If you have some dough I would echo the recommendation for Andromeda.
Also - totally worth picking up a copy of Korg Legacy Analogue collection as laso mentioned - great for deep house IMO. Dunno if you follow him but I am a fan of the UK producer 'Jimpster' and he has thrashed the hell out of this collection...what with the chord memory on those plugins and the unison spread feature + chorus ensemble makes for some GREAT deep house chords!
Not to dis but IMO I would stay away from Microwaves - they are very clunky to program and only worth it if you LOVE that particular gawky sound. Although perhaps you should try the new Waldorf Largo as it has quite a lush sound.
Best thing is to buy a few things and see what sticks - and sell those that dont.

Check out some of vinyljunkie's videos on youtube: YouTube - vinyljunkie07's webcam recorded Video - Wed 22 Jul 2009 13:46:03 PDT
He shows some great housey chords coming out of a jx3p, alpha juno, waldorf blofeld, samples of rhodes in a 3200xl
Chord pad preset on FM7/8 always blows me away
I've also had great luck sampling chords from evp88 / electric / lounge lizard into <insert favorite sampler> (one day I will get a real rhodes to sample !)

im also thinking about the waldorf microwave xt as i love the textures they are capable of, and they dont go for too much over here approx 350 gbp.

for 1200gbp you should be able to get something pretty nice I'd think.
I have a microwave xt that was about 1/2 that price and can do a lot of stuff, although i haven't taken full advantage of it yet.
re. the juno106 I've said this before but will again, i really don't like that it's not velocity sensitive.... this is my only complaint about that one.
