Deep toms (Claude VonStroke)

His recent track "Aundry", has them, as well as "Who's afraid of detroit?" - I'm thinking of the warm and deep toms CvS uses in his music.

What kind of synth is he using? (I doubt they are sampled, as they play in different keys throughout the songs) How should they be compressed to acheve the "soft", yet deep punch they've got?

its a deep tuned sine wave tom,
you can get this kind of sound from an 808 -

use a sample and spread it accross the keyboard so you can play a melodic line with it.

alternitviely - use somthing like ultrabeat, a little modulation - pitch to envelope, snappy envelope, maybe even /push the boat out and add some white noise with low-pass on very low cut-off - like the preset

btw - the lead sound from WHo's afraid of the dark is a sample from Mutekki - Electro essentials -

I read somewhere recently that both these tracks were done in Reason

it's a damn good track however those toms were done (detroit track). hats off to the guy

if i were trying for that sound i would use a mono synth and use porta/glide on my midi-cv converter.
i would also map the pitch bend to a concentric controller for rotational pitch tweakage.

they key here i think is to jam around your bass riff/beat and get a nice lyrical phrase going rather than copy the sound exactly.

I've been fiddling around with the 808, and imported a tom into the exs24, which I've eq'ed and multipressed. i'm quite happy with the result - it's pretty bold but not very "melodic" - are there any good ways to get more character out of it?

Here's a beat with "my" tom, to illustrate my result so far:
test-Toms.mp3

There are no melodic elements in the track, which I suspect could make the toms "disappear" even more..

808 Toms + Serious Compression and a bit of EQ accent between 800hz-1200khz, not a lot.

i would try layering with a sympathetic synth hit.

also try a touch of verb, touch of overdrive/distortion/exciter.

FM8 is great for this, they have a few 808 patches that are good starting points

Claude Von Stroke and Justin Martin are sick producers, I always make sure to check for new tracks by those guys whenever I hit Beatport.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I had the same question that the OP had that didn't get answered. What kind of compression/settings would you use to get the soft tom sound yet the incredible bassy punch? I've been struggling with when and how to use compression in my mixes, especially when applied to bass and drums.

Personally I wouldn't use a compressor unless I really felt they warranted it. Something with an attack of about 40 ms and a quick release of something like 20 to emphasize the attack on the drum.

There's actually a vide where he explains how he did it. If I remember correctly je likes to put the toms on different tracks and then lowpass each tom differently with the q of the lowpast set to the harmonic he likes best. Try searching for whose afraid of detroit tutorial.

i think you will find that Mutekki sampled CVS, not the other way around. Most of the sample packs out are straight jacked from well known tracks. Several trentemoller/dubfire/cvs tracks get all the parts sampled (mastered samples, not really good for producing with) by these companies..

Hey guys,

You can make this sound in many synths!

Start with a triangle wave, (a little more crisp than a sine in this case, but if you want to use a sine feel free).

Once you have your oscillator loaded up, route the pitch to a mod envelope, you want to focus on the decay here. The decay value will determine the sharp fall in pitch that you need to replicate this sound, so try and get a nice snappy envelope happening. Adjust the attack ever so slightly so you dont get any snaps or pops at the beginning of the sound. You can then add a second oscillator, one octave below this sound, mix it in very gently, you should really barely be able to hear it, its just there to give some bottom end weight to the sound, then route the pitch of that oscillator to the same envelope.

I don't think compression is going to be necessary, but some slight saturation effects will go nicely.

Really quite a simple sound to create!
