Mono vs Stereo on A&H Zed 14

Hey

Have to excuse me here, Im a bit of a newbie when it comes to recording/routing with mixing consoles

I just got an Allen & Heath ZED 14 and was wondering what is best for the Mono channels and what is best for stereo... and more generally, why would there be a 4 way EQ on the mono channels and 2 on the stero channels?

It may make no difference at all, but i wonder if anyone would be kind enough to outline what types of kit they have running into mono/stereo channels... and why...

sorry if this doesnt make any sense, but my understanding of mono/stereo is a bit patchy

Kit being plugged in-

Live 6 (via Soundcard)
Roland TR-909 (4 individual outs, clap, snare, hats, ride)
Alesis SR-16
Quasimidi Sirius
Korg Electribe EM-1
Dave Smith Mopho
Yamaha SU200 sampler

Thanks

Steve

Well the obvious candidate for going into the mono channels would be the Roland, as it has the mono outs and could benefit from the additional eq options. I would probably put the Yamaha on the other 2 mono's panned hard left and right. Basically depends on which synth you think needs the extra eq. All the rest can go into the stereo channels.

Just listen to the synth in stereo and decide from there whether it's something you feel deserves a full stereo spread or whether it would be fine working in mono. A synth that's doing mostly basslines for instance would do just fine in mono. Something like the MoPho on the other hand which can do a lot of stereo effects, you'd give it a stereo channel. If a synth is only doing something basic in the stereo field like controlling the master pan, I wouldn't worry so much about giving it a stereo channel because that can easily be emulated with a knob twist and you could save that stereo channel for something else.

A lot of it just comes down having options and convenience. A big reason for the stereo channel strips on the Zed 14 is the single gain slider for both channels. For instance, whatever is coming out of Live, you've probably dealt with stereo placement already in the software, so you'll likely want to run it to a stereo channel such that volume is handled evenly for the two channels. Whereas you might want to process stereo channels from one of your drum machines/samplers separately and so run each channel to its own mono strip. The mono strips on the Zed 14 have inserts, but the stereo strips don't, which might also change how you set stuff up.
