HUGE Techno/Dance/Electro Bass Drums: Where to find?

I would love to hear any suggestions for good VST instruments and/or samples of that huge, boomy, long-decay, sub-bass heavy kick drum often used in Techno/Dance/Electronica. I have some run-of-the-mill VSTs/samples of 808/909-type kicks, but they're nowhere near the size I'm hoping to find. I'm looking for that bass drum that really takes over. Any suggestions or ideas greatly appreciated.

...and here's something for you. Check out:

Variety Of Sound

for some very cool *free* analog-style plugs. The NastyVSD ("Virtual Summing Device") delivers.

thanks

hey buddy,

the huge 808 kicks are never running alone - layer those babies up.. two great ways of getting a whopping bottom:

running your kicks on 2 outputs

track 1) 808 in mono with its attack and top LP'd off
track 2) a nice clicky top HP'd to blend nicely with the 808 bottom

compress the two to taste...

result = huge

second way, grab a sidechain from your kick and run it on a synth giving out a huge constant sine wave. everytime your kick hits the sine wave sounds. Put the synth in mono to keep control of your bottom.

compress the two to taste...

result = huge

check out SPL's transient designer as well... you can grab some pretty short decay 808 samples and make that shit sustain for much longer.

my favourite method is definitely the 1st one as it keeps the bigness down below in mono, and still cuts through beautifully thanks to the clickyness.

what he means is you want one layer that only has say < 100 hz...and has a relatively soft transient, and one layer that is > 100 hz with a sharp transient (attack)

i usually use an real-sounding kick from a break or hq one-shot for the top and a 808 for the bottom...

tbh tho, I rarely layer kicks, I usually use this method more for making snares...getting separate kicks to gel together is typically not worth the time it takes to get them sounding like one sound...gelling the low end can be time consuming...just find a good oneshot from the beginning

get the vengeance house pack if you want to save a lot of time, lots of quality kicks in there that won't require much processing

I second the Vengeance libraries. When I'm feeling lazy about building a kick, Vengeance never fails to impress me and make me feel like an amateur.

I don't recomend Vengeance stuff.
VERY dirty and OVERprocessed sounds.

for clean stylus (like minimal techno, etc) it's a very hard to use non clear sounding samples.

Vote for:
1) thomas penton
2) drums overkill
3) synthation

BUT THIS TOPIC IS ABOUT TECHNIQUE! Not Sample Libs

great library & ultra clean!

for the clicky top sounds i'll usually take a kick that has a lot more high end presence that, yeah, clicks . Like the attack of a 909 for eg.

heres one that I made quickly using Guru standalone... in a track that 808 would def. be mono'd.
