Hey!

I have a question about the Phrase thingie!

how does the recording work in practice? I mean it would be great if I had machine in my studio in to which I could record a pattern on a fly with out needing to start and stop the main sequencer (DAW or a MV8000 in my case).

so, if I have a MiniAK/Micron hooked up with midi i/o and it is being fed with midi sync, can I just hit record and play something and it will loop it? how does it determine the loop lenght? Does is quantize the notes and the loop end? Do I need to set the loop lenght beforehand? Can I create new loops on the fly and have the previous one saved? oh my god so many questions!! :D
Anyways, I hope you get what I'm after

thanks,
-Tomi

What you're recording is not actual audio but MIDI notes, velocities, controller settings etc. Your sequencer or DAW can easily trim, quantize and loop the recorded data.

A lost, lone UPS ranger called on my mobile and left a message today.

He'd been driven to Örsundsbro, outside of Uppsala, in Sweden where I live. Problem was: I was in Uppsala, cuddling with my girlfriend.

He was kind of lost in many ways; saying, I'm standing here outside your house. Ok? Call first, perhaps? Are we supposed to be standing like trees, never moving from our adresses? There seems to be some customs fee. We're in the EU dumb"#(/ it's not customs. It's the COD price of the package. Then he said call me back. Without leaving his number.

Anyway, he had my Miniak ready for delivery. Bummer.

I'll have to go there tomorrow, pretend I'm a tree and wait.

Captain Miniak landed today!

Completely stunned by this little geezer, my god! It's funnier and funkier than any Nord synth I've ever tried, it's bringing Moog vibes and huge polysynth vibes - I'm thinking Oberheim. The sequences are positively insane and the multis are actually something to write home about.

Get one while they last.

If you love

Congrats bitleyTM! That ION/Micron synth engine is a VERY capable beast! The filter emulations capture the essence of the original hardware filters quite well and the matrix routing system makes this synth a semi-modular heaven. I don't know how well all of these features are operated with the MINIAK's interface though... I wish they had a Nord interface on top...(the best VA combination).

You'd better keep it...it won't give you much money back (it's quite cheap nowadays) and certainly, you won't be able to find a better VA engine at this (or even a higher) price...

Been playing with it for hours, it's an amazing synth. Best I've tried in years. Get one! It costs less than HALF as much as a used analog mono and it's for sure much more fun.

Recording a phrase is as easy as doubleclicking on that button. Then click again to engage it. It's Juno chord memory on steroids.

Excellent quality and design, wouldn't recommend it if those departments were letdowns. Beautiful, 70's inspired (think Roland SH1/2) design, stable, usable keys etc. The display is a little funny but fully readable.

Repeat. The price is down by 50% on these. Repeat.

Run!

Ambience on Miniak?

Hello, (my first post here)

I have been slowly gaining ground teasing strings and other ambient drone sounds from my microKorg and I recently purchased a used Akai Miniak.

Any tips from synth users here on accessing the Miniak's ability to give lush, warm strings and spacey, Steve Roach-like drones, and such waveform grist for ambient washes and pads are appreciated.

Thanks!

While I was really into sound it created I must say that I didn't like Micron light keybed.

Is there anyone that actually tried both Micron and Miniak and can he (or maybe even she!) compare them?

Thanx!

I'm not sure (lots can be done, no doubt) but perhaps what you describe would need a bit of added 'hands on' experience. Have you thought about adding a set of cheap & cool guitar FX pedals? Behringer has a number of those, for instance. Instant tweakabilia.

Great idea, have thot of that and I do have many pedals already being a guitarist as well -- so I will try that pedal chain idea as well -- while trying to keep noise levels down by avoiding too many pedals . . .

Sample video

Hey, I saw some people wanting to hear some high-quality audio examples of the Miniak. So here is a video I made. It's a simple little song, but it showcases it's synth engine as well as the sequencer and the drums. Hope you enjoy.

Can anyone confirm whether or not the Miniak's sequencer/arpeggiator will send note data via the MIDI OUT to control external synths?

A couple of things I discovered last night.

The Bad: I’ve long wondered why patches sound different when they are used in the Multi Mode. Now I know: the patch’s effects do not transfer over to the Multi Mode. You have to set the same FX parameters in the Multi Mode to get the same sound. Problem is, if you have different patches that have very different FX assigned to them, something will suffer. The Manual says nothing about this: rather annoying.

The Good: Create three or more sequences with slight variations, using the same sound. In Multi Mode, split the keyboard for each sequence C>B (or as you see fit), so you have:
Seq 1: C0>B0, Seq 2: C1>B1, Seq 3:C2>B2, etc.
Now, transpose Seq 1 up two octaves, Seq 2 up one octave, leave Seq 3 alone. Go nuts.
