Analogue Solutions Semblance 4 voice or REAL Obie 2 voice?

The semblance 4 V is 4 "sems" with a total of 8 osc's!!! it has midi, it has more routing than a SEM and it has a noise generator for every semblance. I know that it does not sound exactly like a Obie 4V, but it still sounds friggin huge

or

i can get an Obie 2 voice totally refurb'd. AND it has the sequencer.... there is no reason why I should turn it down except for the fact that the semblance would give me double the power and it a newer more reliable item.

are there any reasons other than the ones listed above that i might go for one or the other?

are there are semblance users that can give their feedback?

obie's are pretty reliable so if it's full refurbished i wouldn't worry about that too much.

also, the semblance and SEM don't sound identical. the semblance sounds great and has some great features and little differences that the SEM doesn't have. i had the semblance (1 voice version) and i like the way it sounds and the filter is cool and has some nice tricks but i didn't care for the knobs/pots. very plasticy feeling and some of them rubbed on one side or the other but it did sound really nice and had a great PW and it's pretty easy to get something out of it fast and it can be a very inspiring/surprising synth... but i'm sure a real SEM can too.

one other thought.. there was some mention of mr oberhiem making a new SEM w/a new company sort of like DSI though the new SEM will be just like the old one.

i think it was in a NAMM thread where that was talked about and there was a pick of tom oberheim standing next to dave smith and roger linn.

anyway- i ended up parting w/the semblance to get more modcan modules. other than the knobs/pots it was well made in a nice case and sounded good.

AS is making a semblance w/all the patch points brought out to the right on a faceplate called the Telemark.. pretty cool.

Aside from their modular modules I've been pretty disappointed with the build quality of A-Sol. gear.

Oberheim SEMs are to me the biggest most organic sounding synths ever. HUGE ! ! - I have a Fourvoice but Just One SEM firing away has SO much raw power compared to anything else in my rig. Love Em' !

Go for the Two Voice !

I am not a Semblance user, but if you like to move synths to buy other synths, I know it would be a lot harder to re-sell a Semblance than it would an Oberheim Two Voice. With the price of vintage synths rising, this would be a concern, investment wise, if you ever plan to sell it. The cost of an Oberheim Matrix-12 or Jupiter-8 is no longer same as it was two years ago. Correct me if I am mistaken, try running across another Oberheim-2 voice with a sequencer (at the price you are getting it at) compared to finding a semblance. It is just my POV, but I predict the Obie's cost will be going up soon as other synths in it's class have also.

Rollie, if you want that Oberheim sound, get the REAL Obie. You can always spring for a Semblance later if you want to make the switch.

wow... replies from all the GS heavy hitters!!! Thanks everyone for the info. I've decided on the 2 voice. i actually had one for 2 months about 3 years ago. i LOVED it, but had to sell it to cover some debts (argh!) I just so excited to have found one that's just been re-worked... by Davidson Electronics as well! Cheers!
