20's-40's songs about transformation or change?

Hi guys, I'm wanting to do an electronic cover of a 1920's to 40's era song about transformation / change. Any ideas?

Perhaps you could check out some old skool gospel tunes?

There are loads of cds about with pellas from 1930's gospel.

Im not really sure what sort of stuff you are into.....

Other than that, I think its just a case of finding and listening to music from that era, there are loads of sites/blogs dedicated to music from that time (alot of jazz ones especially)........google is your best starting point really.

Be prepared to listen to alot of crap before you find something that really grabs you.

cheers
DS

I'm not expert enough on pre-war music, but there was a lot less political music around then. Much music was regarded as entertainment.
There is this from the 60's:

I would imagine depression songs would be a good place to start

Heard this song on a great compilation "Drug Songs" - highly recommended if you're into songs of that era.

As for songs about change... "You've changed" maybe?

Probably a good deal of Woodie Guthrie's catalog would suffice for such a thing. Although, I'd have a hard time liking Guthrie songs as interpreted though an electronica format but give it a shot....

Have a listen to some Bessie Smith or some the blues singers from that era
like Robert Johnson. A rich vein that has been mined before, by Stones and Zep and
Cream and the rest. But plenty more that can be done with them.

'....nobody loves you when you're down and out....'

Probably older, but "We Are Going Down Jordan" features the line "I was living my life as an Anglican, let me tell you how I changed to a Baptist man"...

Cheers,
Bert

Billie Holiday's singing 'Strange Fruit' -

"Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees"

Heavy Heavy subject but about that time period and a pivotal song.
