I believe the Synth Secrets series from SOS is a good start.

Power Tools For Synthesizer Programming
By Jim Aikin

I just recently purchased this and I've read about a little over a quarter of it. So far I haven't learned much that I didn't already know but I've just gotten into the part where it actually starts discussing programming. The first parts are all about the different kinds of synths, their interfaces and data storage features. Skipping ahead in it some, it looks like a good book and will likely expand my knowledge on the familiar subject. I'd say if you can snag it for $20 or less it's probably well worth it.
