ugh Ikea

I try to avoid using Ikea stuff

most of my best studio furniture has either been something I've dragged home from the dump or metal recycling scrap yard, or something I've built

I have 4 RAST racks which I have been using in my studio for about a year and a half. I cut the bottoms of the racks at an angle for more ergonomic knob twiddling. So far I have no complaints (knocks on wood). Aside from the unfinished look, they work great. On the OTHER HAND, the rolling storage units I have them resting on (can't remember the ikea model name) started bending a month after getting them, which in turn made the RAST racks lean at slightly different angles. These things obviously aren't meant to hold up this much weight, but aren't bent enough to merit throwing them away. Seems to work ok for now.

if it's possible, it might be a good idea to fill any of those tubular arms and legs with dry sand. in order do dampen down any ringing or resonant / sympathetic frequencies.

We just moved into a new house where my old studio desk and setup didn't fit so I needed to purchase a desk....nice $1000-$3000 pricetag for a basic studio setup.

Mine cost $150. Purchased two of the IKEA desk stands/legs, I don't remember the name of the design but they are made for a drafting desk so you can raise and lower it which was perfect since I'm particular to being able to compose sitting and standing in the studio.

The shelves are two of IKEA's birch 4' shelves attached at a 45 degree angle via desk shelf vice brackets that Ikea sells for $15. The desk itself is just a door from Home Depot...$25;, and the lights are a $30 set of track lighting bolted to a long 1x2 turned upside down and resting on the shelves.

Oh yeah, and instead of Aurelex Mopads for under my Dynaudios, I rolled up bamboo placemats and placed 2 under each monitor, achieved the same thing, and cost me $10 at Pier 1.

Anyway, it turned out perfect.

Thanks for the post, I'll check out the nite stand!

Hope you don't mind mate but I'll probably steal the shelf idea from you :D

It says 66cm width so a bit too wide for standard rack gear. Can't beat the Rast I say. You might find an Eina on Ebay, it's worth a look. Search for 'Ikea bedside' as well as Eina.

Also check your local craigslist. I found 2 Einas for really cheap locally long after they stopped making them. You just might have to search for ikea bedside table instead of the actual work Eina...

Another Ikea name that was the older version or Eina is the Corras, so search for that as well.

Are these new? LACK Side table on casters - black-brown - IKEA

They've had Lack side tables before as just regular tables with 4 legs; but I haven't seen these nicer versions yet with the enclosed bottom/underside and rollers.

They have the same dimensions of the regular/old Lacks; so I assume they will fit racks perfectly as well, and look much better than the old Lacks or the ugly unfinished Rast.

you might want to create pull out shelves for each level of that shelving unit so you can access the front panels easily.
also, ikea furniture is known to fall apart, so be careful.

hmmmm... I think i will get 2 of those Lack rolling side tables after I move..it will fit racks perfectly and also the measurements tell me it is the perfect little table to lay my mpc60 on & the other, a Mackie 16ch mixer ....two of them side by side will be perfect for any synth..or, one can lay a 909, or 808, or a mono (sh9, 101, etc) on it ..nice! ..looks way nicer than the unfinished-Rast

Anyone have any suggestions on raising my modular synth 24" off my desk?

IT's this guy:

The way it's situated now, sitting on top of some large novels, is unsteady and not high enough; the modular cables end up all over my keyboard.

Basically i need some sort of stand that is 22-30" in height and 35-50" wide while still a maximum of 14 inches deep.

Ikea or elsewhere, wasn't really sure where to ask this.

Thanks.

Great thread! Has anyone put anything heavy on the lustifik hat/shoe rack? I'd like to be able to put a JX-8P, but I doubt it'd work.

Need some ideas to raise up a 8P from my desk on a very limited space.

I am interested in this adjustable height table with T legs.

GALANT Desk - white, T-leg - IKEA

1) It only shows the height is between 23 5/8 " and 35 3/8 " and does not show the increments. Any idea?

2)
The table's width is only 47". Will the following 59" top work with the base?

VIKA AMON Table top - birch effect - IKEA

Thanks!

the galants are fine so long as you don't put too much weight on them. if you are just gonna put monitors, LCD and KB and maybe a desktop synth/controller you'll be fine..

i have 2 6u racks + some desktop synths and my monitors and LCD on my galant and it was wobbly and sagged in the middle. i made a frame for it out of 2x4's and 4x4's and now it's solid.

the t legs are ok and i wasn't worried about it falling over but it was just wobbly in a springy kind of way because i have a good bit of weight on it.

If they're anything like mine, it's infinitely adjustable between then two extremes.

go to a lumber store, buy some wood and a saw and make what you need. people have done that for thousands of years.

ANyone try using the Vika Amon table tops with the Broder legs/shelves/hardware?

I really like the design of the Broder hardware, easily diff depths and multiple levels and also height adjustable (much cheaper than the height adjustable Vika legs or the more pricey Galants); but I don't like the Broder table tops, neither the metal mesh-screen nor the bare/unfinishd wood..I prefer and like the look of the clean Vika Amon top more.

Right now I use 1 80" broder and 4 teirs, same depth. Only thing I don't like is I have to stand up to use the upper levels and it looks gaudy and humongous being so tall. But later, after I move, I plan to buy 2 or 3 Broders, but shorter 39" legs, and only 2 tiers (so no standing up) and have the first/lower tier the deeper 24", and the 2nd /higher tier the thinner 14" shelf; should look clean. But I hate the unfinished wood and will prolly end up with the wire mesh shelf, which I dislike too. I really prefer the cleaner look of a black Vika Amon top.

Why not pick up one of the old Jerker desks. Adjustable, and one of Ikeas best products for equipment before they discontinued them.
